Prime Day 2018 Festivities begin at 3pm ET today

Another year has gone bye and another Prime Day is almost upon us! The official Festivities for Prime Day 2018 begin at 3PM eastern on Monday 7/16/18 at Amazon. Amazon has published a handy Prime Day guide, and as usual, this morphs into a Prime Week of festivities (as opposed to just a single day), with some offers already going live, including a variety of credit cashback promotions for those paying with a Prime credit card (Chase Visa or Amazon store card). These include 20% back on the GoPRO HERO (2018) action camera.

Other early offers include the Echo Show creature for $139 (up to six per customer at the sale price), and some new product launches that Prime members get first dibs on.

Keep an eye also on the good old Gold Box if you prefer that display format of deals.

Only Prime members can participate in these festivities, however, if you are not a Prime member and want to participate, you can start a FREE Prime Trial and enjoy these festivities along with the other Prime Benefits for 30 days.

Woot now offers FREE 2-Day Prime shipping on select items [Prime members]

The Amazonification of Woot continues with another new experimental feature. As of a few weeks ago, Prime members would get free shipping at Woot, but now, the new experiment gets Prime members free 2-day Prime-like shipping on select Woot items. This is probably for items shipping from Amazon warehouses, so it makes sense they’d be able to do this for paying Prime members.

Here’s an example of a listing, the Klipsch speakers. Here’s an annotated screenshot of the relevant part of the pages for products eligible for this new Woot-Prime benefit:

Prime Only: 10% back on select LG 2017 4K Ultra HD Smart OLED TVs

While checking the upcoming Gold Box schedule, this offer was featured at the bottom of the page. If you are a Prime member and you pay for these with a Prime Credit Card (Chase VISA or Amazon Store card) you will earn 10% as a statement credit instead of the usual 5%. “These” are the LG Electronics 4K Ultra HD Smart OLED TV (2017 Model) for $1700 at 55-inch and $2600 at 65-inch. Unlike the quarterly credit cards, there is no limit on the cashback you can earn with the Prime offers. Only these two main TV-only options are eligible, not the various bundles you see on the product page (neither TV with BluRay nor the TV with soundbar).

Prime Reading: Shutterbug (April), NatGeo (March) and more

If you are a Prime member, one of the ever-growing list of Prime Benefits, is that you have a virtual magazine e-newsstand where you can borrow select individual digital magazine issues and read them as part of the Prime Reading benefit.

Among the latest issues you can read (borrow) for free:

+ Shutterbug (April 2018)
+ National Geographic (March 2018)
+ National Geographic Traveler (February 2018)

New Prime Benefit: 5% Cashback with Amazon Prime Chase VISA at Whole Foods

We have another new Prime benefit! This is not as big as the Sunday announcement that Prime members get free standard shipping at Woot (for most items), but if you have the Amazon Prime Chase VISA credit card and shop at Whole Foods (and pay for the order with said credit card), you will now earn 5% rewards. Non-Prime members with the Amazon Chase VISA credit card will earn 3%, the same percentage they earn on regular Amazon purchases. Via Amazon Press Release.

PS: while the 5% cashback on Amazon.com purchases is earned with both the Amazon Chase Prime VISA and the Amazon Prime Store credit card, the 5% at Whole Foods is only earned with the Amazon Chase Prime VISA, presumably because Whole Foods is not set up to take the Store credit card (and the card may not be set up for retail use to begin with; it’s not a physical credit card to begin with).

New Prime Benefit: Free Shipping at Woot (FINALLY!)

Some thought the day would never come, but as of February 18 in 2018, this is for real! Amazon Prime members can now receive free standard shipping for most of their Woot purchases. This was announced on the official Woot blog and there are also notices scattered throughout the Woot website.

The benefit is free standard shipping, not free 2-day shipping, but it’s definitely better than paying $5 per calendar day for purchases. T-shirt purchases however get “free express shipping” which makes sense, since they are lightweight and they can be compressed for shipping purposes to the size of a burrito if need be.

Here’s an annotated screenshot from the Woot blog summarizing it:

There are some exceptions though. “Gourmet” items, sold by the Gourmet sub-Woot (formerly Wine) are not eligible. You’ll get confirmation on the product page and the shopping cart on what qualifies.

If you are a regular Woot shopper who’s not a Prime member, it’s not a bad idea to give it a try, they offer 30-Day Free Prime Trials. If you make Woot purchases on 20 different days during a rolling 12-month period, that’s the price of a 1-year Prime subscription (20 x $5 = $100).

The list of Prime benefits is getting longer and longer. Take a comprehensive look at our Amazon Prime Benefits mega-post at the main blog.

Free to Read (PRIME): Australian Photography latest issue and more

Among the many Prime Benefits is the Prime Reading program which lets you e-borrow e-books and individual issues of select magazines, library-style, for FREE! Among the current round of free-to-read digital magazine issues is the February 2018 issue of Australian Photography. One you check it out, you can keep it as long as you want, but it will use up one of your ten available “borrowing” slots. A number of other “six degrees of separation” (from photography) digital issues are available such as Nat Geo Traveler, Backpacker, Surfer, Vogue, etc.

Prime Exclusive Phones now without Lockscreen Ads: LG G6 for $420, LG G6+ for $520

Starting today (Wednesday 2/7/18), Amazon is selling their Prime-exclusive smartphones that previously had “Lockscreen Ads” without them! If you have an existing Amazon Prime phone with “Lockscreen Ads”, an update will arrive that will disable them. If you paid out of your pocket to remove the ads, you can contact customer service and have it refunded.

As a result of the ad removal, their prices went up by $20. As of the time of writing, $420 gets you the LG G6 (32GB, Platinum) while $520 gets you the LG G6+ (128GB, Black).

These are factory unlocked, new condition and with USA warranty and with USA carriers in mind. The Moto models look like they have already been sold out. I don’t know if Amazon plans to discontinue this program once all available phones are sold out…

Only Prime members are able to buy them.

Prime Reading includes February 2018 issue of Shutterbug

If you are a Prime member, one of the ever-increasing Prime Benefits is the Prime Reading program. They offer a library of about 1000 e-books along with some digital magazine issues and audiobooks and comic books, and you can borrow and read these. You can have ten out maximum at any time, but you can return and borrow as often as you want.

Among the latest digital magazine issues you can borrow for free is the February 2018 issue of Shutterbug. Other February 2018 digital issues you can borrow include Consumer Reports, Popular Science, and various “six degrees of separation” topics.

Speaking of magazines, running until Monday night is a three print magazines for $12 total per year promotion at DiscountMags.

EXAMPLE

Click on the various product categories over there to see eligible products. Or while you are perusing Amazon product pages, eligible products will mention this with tiny font on their page. Here’s a screenshot:

Prime Credit Cards Only: 20% Statement Credit on 301 Photography Lenses (lots of Rokinon and Samyang)

Also participating in the Prime 20% Statement Credit offer are a total of 301 photography lenses. We already mentioned some of them, but I obviously can’t create individual posts for 301 lenses. The majority of them are Rokinon and Samyang models for various camera systems. You can find them all in the Digital Camera Lenses listing which you can filter by mount and manufacturer and other factors available in the left hand side over there.

Remember, these lenses must be sold and shipped by Amazon itself and you must pay for the items with either one of the Amazon Prime credit cards and you must be a Prime member. Check our Introductory post for an explanation of the offer.

This is a limited time offer. Expiration date is unknown.

Prime Credit Cards Only: Buy Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 SP Di VC USD XLD for $450, Get $90 Statement Credit

Select Pentax gear are not the only ones eligible for the 20% off Prime Credit Card Statement Credit promotion. There’s a Tamron lens as well, available in either the Canon or Nikon DSLR system.

The new condition Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 SP Di VC USD XLD goes for $450 at Adorama and B&H Photo with 4% promotional rewards.

The same price is available at Amazon by Amazon itself. If you pay for this with either one of the Prime credit cards, you will get a 20% statement credit, which is $90 in this case!

This is a limited time offer! You can find details and all the eligible products through the Prime 20% Statement Credit offer page.

Prime Credit Cards Only: Buy Pentax K70 with 18-135 for $850, Get $170 statement credit

This offer is bit more complicated, so please read carefully!

The Pentax K70 body only goes for $600, while the K70 with the 18-135mm goes for $850 at B&H Photo and Adorama in either the black or the silver color schemes.

The same prices are available at Amazon by Amazon actual. Of these kits, only the K70 with 18-135mm kits are eligible for the 20% statement credit IF you pay with a Prime credit card. You pay $850 at checkout, and after your credit card statement closes, you receive a $170 statement credit.

If you purchase the K70 body only from Amazon, and pay with a Prime credit card, you will only receive the standard 5% statement credit, not a 20% statement. Only the “K70 with 18-135” kits are eligible.

EXAMPLE

As always, double check that the product you are about to buy is eligible for this promotion by making sure the offer is mentioned on its product page. Take a screenshot as well to be on the same side! Example for the K70 with 18-135 vs the K70 body only:

The K70 with 18-135mm is eligible as you can see

The K70 body only is NOT eligible. The offer is NOT mentioned on its product page

This is a limited time offer! You can find details and all the eligible products through the Prime 20% Statement Credit offer page.

Prime Credit Cards Only: Buy Pentax KP for $880, Get $176 statement credit

The two Pentax K-P bodies range from $880 to $900 at Adorama and B&H Photo.

The same prices are available at Amazon by Amazon itself. But if you are a Prime member, and PAY with either Prime credit card, you will receive a 20% statement credit, around $176 for the silver KP and around $180 for the black KP. For more details on the 20% statement credit offer, read the introductory post, I don’t want to repeat the whole thing in every post.

This is a limited time offer! You can find details and all the eligible products through the Prime 20% Statement Credit offer page.

Prime Credit Cards Only: Buy Pentax K-1 Body for $1900, Get $380 Statement Credit

The Pentax K-1 body goes for $1900 with a FREE Pentax D-BG6 Battery Grip at B&H Photo and Adorama.

It also goes for $1900 at Amazon by Amazon itself but Amazon does not include the free Battery Grip. HOWEVER, if you are a Prime member, and you pay for this purchase sold and shipped by Amazon, paid with either Prime credit card, you will receive $380 back as a statement credit! I don’t want to repeat the details of this promotion in every post, read the introductory post here.

The battery grip costs $220 on its own, so the statement credit offer handily defeats the free battery grip.

Here’s how the Amazon product page looks when this promotion is alive and kicking:

This is a limited time offer! You can find details and all the eligible products through the Prime 20% Statement Credit offer page.

Pay with Prime Card: 1-Year Prepaid Creative Photography Plan for $96 after Statement Credit

IF

  1. you are a Prime member
  2. you are buy participating products sold and shipped by Amazon itself
  3. you pay for them with the Prime credit cards, either the Chase Prime VISA or the Amazon Prime Store Credit Card

…. THEN you will receive 20% back of the purchase price as a statement credit on your credit card instead of the usual 5% statement credit. No coupon is needed, just fulfilled by the above prerequisities. This is an offer you get even if you don’t know about it. And if you don’t check your credit card statement, you may not even know you got it. And if you don’t know it happened, did it really happen? 🙂

Among the eligible products are a dozen Adobe subscription plans (some are “Student and Teacher” so please pay attention to the individual listings) including the 1-Year Creative Cloud Photography plan with 20GB storage for $120. You will receive a $24 statement credit, making it a $96 after statement credit.

All eligible products mention this on their individual product page. If you don’t see it, means the promotion expired or something else is wrong:

The expiration date is unspecified, so the offer is good as long as you see it mentioned on the product pages.

20% Statement Credit on Select Purchases Paid with Prime VISA or Prime Store Card

And the offers keep on coming! If you are a Prime member, AND you have either the Amazon Chase Prime VISA credit card, or the Prime Store credit card, AND you purchase eligible products participating in the promotion you will receive a whopping 20% back as a statement credit on your credit card. You get the usual 5% plus a 15% bonus cashback, making it 20% total. The six eligible categories include Electronics, but it’s only a subset of all products that are eligible. This happens automatically if you fulfill the prerequisites, so you don’t have to enter a coupon. If you can find items you want/need with this, it’s a great deal. I’ll look into it more later in the weekend. Expiration date unspecified.

Prime Reading for FREE: Shutterbug and CR November 2017 e-issues

If you are a Prime member, one of the Prime Benefits is the Prime Reading program that lets you read for free from a list of roughly 1000 ebooks. You can read as much as you like but you can only have ten items checked out at any one time, so if you are getting close to ten, some strategy may be needed – mix some quick reads with some long-running reads so you are not out of picks. But even if you are, you can return something and re-borrow it again a few days later [assuming it doesn’t leave].

One of the lesser known benefits of Prime Reading is that single issues of magazines are also available. Among the latest additions, of potential photography interest, they have:

+ Shutterbug (November 2017)

+ Consumer Reports (November 2017)

+ and the usual “six degrees of separation” from photography: fashion, sports, nature, etc

As with all Netflix-style services, you can only read as long as you are a paying member. If you cancel the Prime membership, or return a book/magazine, you can no longer read it. However, there is no time limit on how long you can keep it checked out. I’ve found things I had checked out for over a year. No late library fees here 🙂

When logged in to your account, each magazine tells you which devices (in your account) it can be read from. For magazines, it is typically iOS and Android only, so the biggest reading screens you can get are probably iPad PROs and 2-in-1 Chromebooks with Google Play. Or that giant old 18.4″ Samsung Galaxy View.

Moto X4 with Prime Lockscreen Offers for $330

If you don’t want to pay Samsung and Apple and iGoogle nearly four figures for their latest flagships, but still want to get a solid smartphone, the fourth generation of the Moto X is rolling out for $400. But if you are a Prime member and don’t object to seeing Lockscreen Offers and Ads, Amazon is offering this model for $70 less, you can get the Lenovorola Moto X4 for $330 in either color scheme. Limit one per color per customer. It will come out October 26 (2017).

This is an all-carrier phone, it works with all four major US carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon), which will likely (other things equal) help with its resale value as long as most phones sold are not all-carrier phones.

Of photography interest, it has dual rear cameras and microSD slot and IP68 water resistant. With 3GB RAM and Snapdragon 630 and 32GB on-board and 5.2″ 1080p screen.

AMEX Offers (YMMV): Get 5000 Membership Points when you pay $99+ for your annual Prime membership

This is a YMMV. IF you have an American Express credit card with Membership Points (not a Cashback card like Blue Cash), check the AMEX Offers section on the AMEX website or app. It’s right below your account summary when you login. Among the various offers floating there, they have a pretty good offer IF you are willing to pay your Prime membership with your eligible AMEX credit card.
