Pre-order the Nikon D850 FilmMaker’s Kit for $5500
Nikon has a hard time making enough Nikon D850s to satisfy demand but that didn’t stop them from creating the “FilmMaker’s Kit”, it is the D850 body only bundled with a trio of f1.8G FX lenses (20, 35, 85), the ME-1 Stereo Microphone and ME-W1 wireless microphone, a 7 inch Atomos Ninja Flame and a spare EN-EL15a battery.
The price of this bundle is $5500 and it is available for pre-ordering at Amazon by Amazon itself and by Adorama and by B&H Photo… This has been added to our Stock Status Tracker…
WHEN DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO BUY THE FILMMAKER KIT?
The three f1.8G lenses on their own go for $800, $527, $477 respectively, totaling (with the help of a calculator) $1804. The Atomos goes for $795 on its own, increasing the bundle value to $2600. The battery goes for $60 on its own, while the two microphones go for $134 and $199 respectively. So that’s a total under $3000 for the Filmmaker kit, plus $3300 for the camera = $6300, with an asking price of $5500 for the bundle.
So with a difference of $2200 between the D850 body only ($3300) and the Filmmaker kit ($5500), you’d need to want at least $2200 worth of the kit items to make this a good deal. In other words, if you want all three lenses AND the Atomos, then it’s worth doing it, otherwise it becomes a too close to call type of a situation.
Canon 5D Mark IV Body with Pixma PRO 100 Printer and Paper and Meural Canvas Leonara (27″ IPS Canvas-Frame) for $3300 after $350 MIR
There is a new twist in the Canon PIXMA mail-in rebate offers at Adorama. In addition to the usual bundle they are also including a FREE Meural Canvas (priced $595 on its own) for the same price. But let’s start from the beginning.
Adorama is bundling the Canon 5D Mark IV body only with the PIXMA PRO 100 printer, its trusty sidekick the SG-201 (50pk 13×19″ photo paper) and the Meural Canvas Leonora Black model. You pay $3649 at checkout with free shipping. After you receive it all and make sure all is well, following the instructions and deadlines you submit the usual PIXMA mail-in rebate. The Sony a7 III body only is expected to arrive April 10 for $2000 [follow Stock Status Tracker for updates on that one]. But if you prefer to get the previous generation model, the a7 II body only, it goes for $1300 on its own, but B&H Photo is currently bundling it with the Sony battery grip for $1396 with free expedited shipping. This is the official Sony battery grip, model VGC2EM, not a 3rd-party grip. The grip on its own goes for $250.

A maximum of five per eBay user at this price. It comes with a 1-year warranty from the seller 6ave (not Nikon USA)… The price at authorized Nikon USA dealers is $3300…

Sony has plenty of 35mm full frame cameras [see 35mm full frame price charts] but that’s not stopping them from revealing a brand new model! The Sony a7 III body only is now an official product and pre-orders of it will begin on Wednesday 2/28/18 at 11am eastern at authorized Sony dealers.
The starting price is $2000 for the body only, and $2200 for the kit with the 28-70mm lens. A listing for the camera is available at B&H Photo and Adorama with the pre-ordering option activating on Wednesday at 11am eastern.
This has been added to the New Cameras of 2018 tracking page and has given mirrorless cameras a 7-1 lead over DSLRs in 2018.

Pentax K-1 Getting $550 Optional Upgrade with K-1 II Internals
Putting to shame larger camera manufacturers, Pentax announced that existing Pentax K-1 photographers (this is a two year old camera, announced February 2016 [see New Cameras of 2016]) won’t be left behind! They are offering an optional $550 hardware upgrade to the K-1 that will give it the K-1 II internals. The service will be provided by the trusty Precision Camera of Austin::Texas between May 21 and September 30 in 2018. The service won’t be available before or after this date range. Details at the press release which describes the changes as follows (with more details as we get closer to upgrade time):
“The PENTAX K-1’s main circuit board will be replaced to add new functions featured in the new PENTAX K-1 MKII. Additionally the current SR logo on the PENTAX K-1 MKII will be replaced with the new PENTAX K-1 MKII logo.”
Speaking of the upcoming K-1 II, Amazon itself is now accepting pre-orders for $2000 but unlike Adorama and B&H Photo, Amazon does not currently include the Pentax D-BG6 for FREE with pre-orders. Eventually the Amazon AI Bots may wake up and add it but for now, it’s not included.
It will be interesting to see what this upgrade option will do to the used prices of the Pentax K-1, since the Upgrade optional increases the value potential of the camera. However, the four month upgrade window further complicates things since there is a cut-off point. The lowest used price as of the time of writing is $1600 in “Used – Condition 10” at B&H Photo and “Like New Minus” at KEH Camera. Amazon’s own Warehouse Deals (not 3rd-party sellers there) offers it for $1428 but no warranty (KEH offers 180 days, B&H 90 days). Warehouse Deals offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee only. Mayhaps some Options Trading technology may be needed to figure this one out 🙂

PS: if you need a full frame Nikon DSLR now, want the D850 but the waiting is driving you mad, there are some good deals on other refurbished Nikon DSLRs that can keep you going until/unless the D850 becomes available.
