Essential Phone drops to $500

The semi-modular (has a 360 degree camera optional accessory among others) Essential Phone is now down another $100 in the white color scheme, you can get it in new condition, factory unlocked, with USA warranty for $500 at Amazon by Amazon itself. This started out at $700. This is the brain child of Android creator Andy Rubin.

UPDATE: the Black Moon color scheme is now down to $500 as well…

Meanwhile the Galaxy Note 8 remains in the all-encompassing “TOOS” status.

B&N coupons: $5 off $40+ OR $10 off off $75+

If you like to buy books at the Barnes and Noble website, they have a new promotion running until 10/24/17 at 11:59PM, coupon code BOOKENDS gets you a discount depending on your order total:

+ $5 off orders of $40+
+ $10 off orders of $75+
+ the usual coupon exclusions apply

Independently of the coupon, a redistribution of the old Apple Price Fixing e-Book Settlement is in progress, so if you find small store credits in your e-book seller accounts, this is probably it.

Strategically this is good for books and such that have the same price everywhere, whether they are big photography books or camera guides, or instructional guides. Publishers love having price control, so coupons like this are a good way to get a discount on books that are price fixed.

The Clearance section is another place to look for deals. You can drill down the sub-categories or go directly to the Photography Clearance section. There’s also this 30% – 75% off Clearance page.

(ENDED) Tuesday: 20% off Monoprice without minimum purchase

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (US version) TOOS at Amazon

The US version with US warranty, factory unlocked, of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 flagship smartphone with its dual OIS back cameras, in the Orchid Gray color scheme is now at the all-encompassing “Temporarily out of stock” status at Amazon, sold and shipped by Amazon itself. This is a step in the right direction (over Pre-Order status without a date) but still not a concrete date. But it’s getting there!

Meanwhile the B&H Photo listings remain in “New Item – Coming Soon” condition. Note that the B&H page has a mix of North American and International variants, so make sure you are looking at the correct model you are interested in.

Speaking of flagships, the Essential Phone is now down to $599 (from $699) in both color schemes, in the new condition factory unlocked with USA warranty model.

BANG FOR THE BUCK ALTERNATIVE

This if you want an uber flagship smartphone. If not, for the same price, you can buy 3-4 units of the Moto G5 Plus with “all carrier” support (the Big Four in the US market) for $240 with Prime Lockscreen Ads or for $300 Factory Unlocked. Note [no pun intended] that the $185/$235 model is with 2GB RAM / 32GB storage, while this $240/$300 model is with 4GB RAM / 64GB storage. The extra RAM is more important, especially if you plan on keeping/using the phone throughout its lifecycle, since apps get more and more bloated as time goes by (even if you don’t upgrade to a newer OS version).

Digital Photo PRO or Videomaker for $5 per magazine per year

If you are interested in either “Digital Photo PRO” or “Videomaker”, this is a good weekend to buy them through the DiscountMags weekend sale ending on Monday night. The theme of this weekend is $5 per magazine per year. Both of those typically go for more than $5.

Two more photography magazines are at their “regular” sale price of $5 per magazine per year: “Outdoor Photographer” and “Digital Photo” (not PRO). The usual assortment of “six degrees of photographic separation” magazines are available, such as fashion, sports, nature, tech (eg Wired), Bridal Guide, Martha Stewart Weddings, and more.

These are printed magazines delivered glossily to US addresses. If a magazine is a digital offer, it says so in its box and mentions it is delivered by Zinio.

As usual, you can sign up for up to three years per magazine. These are good for new subscribers, existing subscribers renewing, or gifts for other people.

Prime Reading for FREE: Shutterbug and CR November 2017 e-issues

If you are a Prime member, one of the Prime Benefits is the Prime Reading program that lets you read for free from a list of roughly 1000 ebooks. You can read as much as you like but you can only have ten items checked out at any one time, so if you are getting close to ten, some strategy may be needed – mix some quick reads with some long-running reads so you are not out of picks. But even if you are, you can return something and re-borrow it again a few days later [assuming it doesn’t leave].

One of the lesser known benefits of Prime Reading is that single issues of magazines are also available. Among the latest additions, of potential photography interest, they have:

+ Shutterbug (November 2017)

+ Consumer Reports (November 2017)

+ and the usual “six degrees of separation” from photography: fashion, sports, nature, etc

As with all Netflix-style services, you can only read as long as you are a paying member. If you cancel the Prime membership, or return a book/magazine, you can no longer read it. However, there is no time limit on how long you can keep it checked out. I’ve found things I had checked out for over a year. No late library fees here 🙂

When logged in to your account, each magazine tells you which devices (in your account) it can be read from. For magazines, it is typically iOS and Android only, so the biggest reading screens you can get are probably iPad PROs and 2-in-1 Chromebooks with Google Play. Or that giant old 18.4″ Samsung Galaxy View.

NewEgg launches Thursday Live Stream with Deals

Online shopping got a bit stale in terms of innovation before the explosion of mobile, and now, the much tighter integration of digital and “real world” is bringing more crazy things, like Amazon’s Treasure Truck.

NewEgg doesn’t have Amazon-type of real world infrastructure, but they have YouTube technology! Every Thursday at 1pm ET, they are starting a NewEgg NOW Live Stream talking about various tech products and services, and while that stream is running, below it, a variety of tech deals are offered.
