Today is, among many other things (because there are many things and only 366 days per days), is “Day Against DRM”, freedom from artificial digital leashes (insert anti-DRM-rant-ExTreMe-EDiTiOn-2016-rem1x.html here). To celebrate, O’Reilly Books have a 50% off sale with coupon DRM2016. If your order total is $100+, then the coupon gets you 60% off. This only applies to e-books, not print books, not print+digital. Their “Learning Paths” are not eligible for the coupon, but they are on sale for $99 each. Sale ends Wednesday at 8am eastern.
They have mostly technical books, so you can either browse the categories or search for your items of areas of interest, for instance, photography related things to search for:

I did not get around to posting the Lightning Deals schedule last night, but I “caught” one shortly after going live, the Adobe Photoshop Elements 14 Classroom in a Book by Evans and Straub is on sale for $22.58 in paperback format at Amazon. Free shipping for Prime members or with a $25+ order (of books) or $49+ of general purpose items. Non-Prime members can start buying it at 1:30pm ET. It is 19% claimed as of 1:24pm ET.
The National Geographic store has a special promotion for skywatchers. If you spend $100+ on more on items that are part of their Skywatching Collection, you will receive the “National Geographic Guide to the Night Sky Special Issue” magazine for FREE.
There is no coupon code, but you have to manually add the magazine to the shopping cart (it’s at the top of the aforelinked page). The promotion explains: “For the free promotion, please add the National Geographic Guide to the Night Sky Special Issue Magazine to your cart. Aptly named e-book seller eBooks.com has a coupon promotion for April 2016, use coupon code Categorysalecp at the payment details page to get 20% off the price of books in select categories (computing, business, etc). A few photography related books are in this category as well. To see which ones are available search for your item of interest (eg Photoshop, DSLR, GIMP, etc) using the second lower search bar under “Computer Science” in the Computing category page. If you use the main search bar, you have to enter the category ID in the search box, eg type something like “photoshop SubjectID:2239” or “DSLR SubjectID:2239”. These are DRM-free e-books and are available to download in ePUB and PDF formats and/or read online.

If you want to buy camera and photography books, especially ones that have the same prices at the major retailers, one way to get a discount is to get a discounted gift card at one of the stores offering them. Which brings us to the latest eBay Deals where the SVW Gift Cards eBay store is offering $100 Barnes and Noble Gift Cards (plastic gift cards delivered by mail) for $88 with free shipping. Limit three per buyer… Multiple book sellers sell at the BN website (just like Amazon), so you can also get books of interest at lower prices in used condition…

The Leap Day promotion expired…
If you like to read a lot of ebooks, for a limited time during the Valentine shopping season, Amazon has a 25% off discount on Prepaid Kindle Unlimited (KU) subscriptions. With this prepaid promotion, you get 6 months for $45, or 12 months for $90, or 24 months for $180. The price will be discounted automatically in the shopping cart when you reach the Checkout page (top right corner will have the 25% off discount factored in). You can delete it from the shopping cart if you just want to check the price. With the discount, it comes out to $7.50 per month with the prepaid options.
There are a handful of Camera and Photo ebooks that are part of KU. This list was created in October 2014 (at the main blog) so you can get a feel for it. Please keep in mind that new books have been added since then, and some may have been removed since that list was posted. Many of the camera and photo books have pictures and diagrams and menus, so bigger screens (PCs, laptops, tablets, big smartphones) are better suited than black and white e-ink readers. In addition to photo-related ebooks, if you like to read a lot of fiction and non-fiction, especially from non-major publishers, this is a good way to go through a lot of books – whether you do the prepaid or month to month subscription.
Kindle Unlimited is typically a $10/mo month-to-month no-contract service (like Netflix but for ebooks). Just like Netflix, only a percentage of all available ebooks are participating, mostly non-major publishers and self-published authors. You can checkout up to ten ebooks at any time. You can borrow each book for as little or as long as you like while a paying subscriber. You do not own any of these ebooks. You can switch books as many times as you like during a month, but you can only have ten ebooks out at any given time (think of it like a brick and mortar library system). Some audiobooks are also included in Kindle Unlimited (through seamless transition to Audible) .
In parallel, Amazon has a sale of their own Fire Tablets and eBook Readers.

The price of the items drops after you click “Add to Cart”. No coupon code needed, but you must add the item to the shopping cart to see the sale price.
For example, here’s a $50 book (that’s the price shown at their website) that drops to $25 after you add it to cart (annotated screenshot crop below)

50% off list price is sometimes a great price, sometimes it is not, depending on the book and such. So if you are not familiar with a particular book’s price range, you may also want to price-check it at Barnes and Noble and Amazon and such.

Use the categories in the left hand side of their website to find these categories, or use your in-browser search feature to look for “photography”. It will find it after you type “pho”, you don’t even have to type the whole thing.
PS: as with many category-based sales, eligible items are what their computer thinks belong to those categories. There could be false-positives and false-negatives. I can’t check the coupon on every one of the 4000+ photography e-books they have over there. They are available in ePUB or PDF. They have DRM. You can also read them in a web browser.

Photography Books action now, the “Through the African American Lens” book, part of the Double Exposure series from GILES (February 2015) is currently on sale in new condition for $8.50 at Walmart.com. Free shipping with an order of $35+ or if it is available for store pick-up at a nearby brick and mortar store.
If the Walmart options don’t work out for you, Amazon itself has discounted it but not fully price-matched it, it goes for $11 and it is eligible for free 1-day delivery if you are a Prime member where it is available (and place a $35+ order) or free 2-day shipping for Prime members or free supersaver shipping with a $35+ order for non-Prime members..
If you like to read or flip through free e-books, I spotted a couple of fairly new ones at the Kindle store. As of the time of writing, they are $0.00 to buy (but I don’t know for how long they will remain free). First up, with a June 21st publication, a 37 page Lighting Tips ebook by James Carren. Next up, the 79 page Photoshop Set for Beginners by Dwayne Brown.
The Barnes and Noble website has a Book Clearance Sale (actual physical books, not ebooks) that includes some Photography related books. You can get to most of them under “Nonfiction” in the left sidebar over there, “Art, Architecture & Photography” is the first link. You can also filter the big list by price or discount percentage.
O’Reilly Media (not to be confused with Papa Bear) is celebrating anti-DRM Day by offering 50% to 60% off their ebooks and training videos when you use coupon code DRM2015 over there by May 7 at 8am eastern time. Over 11,000 titles are eligible for 50% off. If your order total is $100 or more, the coupon gets you a 60% off discount instead. This 480 pager is “Photography: The Definitive Visual History”, released September 29 in 2014. It is available for purchase for $31 to $37 (shipping and tax vary depending on retailer and location) at Buy.com’s eBay store and Powell’s via BN and Rakuten itself and Barnes and Noble and Amazon itself.
