The cryptocurrency mania has created a bit of a kerfuffle for legitimate buyers of some computer parts such as graphics cards, eating up supplies and increasing prices. But just like the cryptocurrency markets go up and down, so do the graphics cards prices. At the moment, the members-only shopping site that is Massdrop (anyone can join for free) is having a Graphics Card Sale featuring 18 models ranging from $250 to $950. Brands include MSI, Gigabyte and one each of Sapphire and AORUS.
Note that Massdrop is a group-buy service. Orders will ship after the promotion ends. The shipping estimate is early May 2018 and there is no option to speed up delivery. All sales are final.

This is a “Bag the Non-Camera Bags” clearance sale, not camera bags! Touch of Modern is having a big Clearance Sale on Bags and assorted travel accessories until 4/4/18 at 12pm pacific time. Lots of options and sizes are available. Some could be repurposed for camera gear by reusing padding and dividers from other camera bags. Especially with many clothing/fashion brands, prices can be all over the place, so price-check any products or brands whose price-ranges you may not be familiar with.

As flagship smartphone prices keep climbing, so is the average consumer’s interest in alternative bang for the buck smartphones. One such line is the Motorola G series, especially the “all carrier” phones, the ones that work out of the box with all four major US carriers. Among them is the G5 Plus with the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage option. And if you are a Prime member, you can buy ONE unit on sale for $210 with free shipping at Amazon by Amazon itself. This is fully unlocked with USA warranty. Amazon no longer has lockscreen ads, they just pre-install their apps and widgets on the phones.
NOTE that this phone does not have NFC (no contactless mobile payments with it) and it is microUSB power (no USB-C). At this price range, even if it had USB-C, it would likely be USB 2.0, not USB 3.*. It has a fingerprint reader and a headphone jack though which can be a plus for security and convenience.

Apple’s Education Event yesterday revealed a new iPad targeting education, but also generating a lot of interest among the general consumer looking for a $300-ish iPad with support for the Apple Pencil (aka digital stylus). For consumers, this new 9.7″ inch iPad is available for pre-ordering for $330 with a $25 Best Buy e-gift-card at the Best Buy website. The $330 price is for the base Wifi-only model with 32GB storage.
The prices increase as usual with more storage, the 128GB goes for $430 (the usual +$100 storage tier bump). Meanwhile the 32GB Cellular model goes for $460 and the 128GB Cellular goes for $560 (the usual +$130 bump).
OF photography interest is support for the Apple Pencil. The Apple pencil is NOT included. It is also compatible with the upcoming Logitech Crayon.
The iPads are still not available for purchase by Amazon itself (various 3rd-party sellers offer them but not Amazon itself), so the iPad tablet market is still doing okay. If they were close to the panic button, they’d be sold by Amazon itself as well 🙂
