UPDATE Thur 10:53pm ET: ships in 1-3 months, but still available for $159. Updated link below…
If you want to try your Android photo apps on a Chromebook (even Lightroom is on Google Play these days), AND you don’t want to wait for the IFA 2016 new ChromeOS announcements [see Trade Show Calendar], one of the devices that supports this new feature [running Google Play Android apps on ChromeOs devices] is on sale, the 11.6″ ASUS C201PA-DS02 (4GB RAM, 16GB SSD) for $159 with free shipping with a limit of three per customer. Other specs: 1366×768, no touchscreen, Rockchip 1.8 GHz Processor, TPM, promised long battery life, 2-years of 100GB Google Drive free, HDMI, USB, SD card reader (up to 128GB).
PS: with the web getting more bloated every day, and HTML5 replacing Flash (HTML5 can’t be blocked by blocking/turning-off Flash], 4GB RAM is minimum RAM even for a relatively minimalist OS like ChromeOS.
We take yet another break from the Pre-Orders Madness with actual real tangible products with some of the latest non-camera specials from B&H Photo as follows (with free shipping):
+ Apple 13.3″ MacBook Air Notebook Computer specials (four options, $1450 to $2200; also a 11.6″ for $1230)

+ LG Chromebase 21.5″ All-in-One Desktop Computer for $259 (idea: a general purpose computer for clients and customers and visitors to keep them busy while waiting?)

Late start today, a double fifteen yard penalty! We start smartphone-zooming, the new ASUS Zenfone with its 3x near-flat optical zoom lens is now in-stock and ready to ship, unlocked without contract requirements, for $400 with free shipping at B&H Photo. Optical zoom lenses have had a hard time breaking out in non-superzoom camera-phones, but ASUS is trying their hand at it with the new ASUS ZenFone, and this creature, unlocked with 64GB on-board storage and a 3x flat-ish optical zoom lens (4-11mm f/2.7-4.8) is now available for pre-order for $400 at B&H Photo. This is model ZX551ML-23-4G64G-BK, with Android 5.x, a generous 4GB RAM, Intel Atom Ant Z3580 processor, 5.5-inch iPS Gorilla Glass 4 1920 x 1080 screen, microSD slot, and things like that. This looks like an actual phone, unlike the various Samsung superzoom Android phones that look more like travel-zoom digital cameras than phones.
If you are looking for a bang for the buck Windows 10 desktop computer, the ASUS M32CD is now in-stock and ready to ship for $430 with free shipping at Amazon by Amaozn itself, with a limit of five per customer. This has the all new Skylake Intel Core i5-6400 Quad-Core, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVD burner, HDMI and VGA, USB 3.1, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, card reader, keyboard, mouse, etc.
NOTE: some of the reviews are from earlier models, and maybe from an i3 Skylake model ($355, pre-order).
UPDATE 9/18/15: the Skylake i5 ASUS M32CD Desktop is no longer orderable and the Amazon Product page has no estimate on if/when this will come back…
Meanwhile, the other one mentioned in this post, the i3-4170 model remains available for pre-order for $355.
Monitor action now, of the ASUS variety, and thankfully no mail-in rebate needed. It is the 27-inch ASUS PB278Q IPS computer monitor, with a 2560×1440 resolution, many inputs (HDMI, DVI-D, DisplayPort, VGA), 100% (sRGB), various adjustments (image and physical), and a boatload of cables included in the package. The connections are on the left side, not behind the monitor (you can see them in all their glory in picture #6 in the main gallery over there). It averages 4.3 out of 5 based on 875 customer reviews and has nearly 400 questions answered over there. Limit four per customer.
Oops, I forgot the price and link. It goes for $400 at Amazon by Amazon itself 🙂
If you are the early adopter type and are looking for a new budget-flagship unlocked Android smartphone without a contract and no commitments to a carrier, the 5.5 inch ASUS Zenfone 2 is now available as a North American product from ASUS, and it is in-stock and ready to ship for $300 at Amazon in either the silver color scheme or red color scheme. It has a 13mp f2 camera, 4GB of RAM (I think the first, or one of the first), 64-bit Intel Atom processor, 64GB storage, microSD (up to 64GB), 1920×1080 Gorilla Glass 3 IPS display, Android 5.0, dual SIM (of interest to traveling photographers), compatible with GSM networks (4G LTE), 60% charge in 39 minutes, etc.
NOTE: if you are searching at Amazon, there are a lot of international/imported models listed there as well.
If you are curious about it, B&H Photo will have a live-streaming panel talking about it on Tuesday 5/19/15 at 1pm eastern. In the meantime, there is a technical preview at Anandtech (with benchmarks and such) and a review with camera samples at Tom’s Guide.
