Pre-order new Nokia 6 Android phone for $230 (or $180 with Ads)

Once upon a time giants of communications, Motorola and Nokia had their soap-opera paths of mergers and acquisitions. The current incarnation of the HMD era of Nokia brand is launching Android smartphones, and the current leader of their pack is now available for pre-order with USA warranty in the US market!

The Nokia 6 is available for pre-order in three color schemes for $230 each at Amazon by Amazon itself. This is fully compatible with T-Mobile, and partially compatible with AT&T (missing a couple of bands – check phone websites/forums for complete details). This is as close to a pure Android phone as a 3rd-party maker can make with Google PLAY support. Perhaps trying to fill the void of good old Nexus getting shutdown by The Google.

This is not a flagship phone, but you get 3GB RAM, 32GB on-board storage, microSD card (up to 128GB), a 5.5-inch full HD touchscreen, Snapdragon 430 quad-core, Android 7.1 (how many phones offer this now?), etc.

On the other hand, if you want to pay $50 less, and you are comfortable with the way Amazon does their Sponsored Lockscreen Offers and Ads, Amazon is also offering a Lockscreen Ads version for $180 in two of the three colors. This is restricted to Prime members only, and it appears to have a limit of one per color per customer at the moment.

IF you are not a Prime member, but you want to get the Lockscreen Ads version, you can do it by becoming a Prime member. You will pay the full price of $230, but you will receive a $50 Amazon Gift Card AFTER you become a paying Prime member (you get a 30-day free trial). The Details also note that if you return the phone or cancel your Prime membership within 3 months of purchase, they make charge you back for the $50 gift card). In other words, they are trying to prevent people from signing up just to buy the phone for $50 less and then cancelling 🙂

NOTE: as usual at Amazon, there are also listings of the international/imported versions of the phone. The Chinese version has 4GB RAM and 64GB on-board. If you are surfing around, make sure you are looking at the right version!

This has been around outside the US for a few months now, so you can find many reviews and opinions on it, such as this 9-pager from GSM Arena. Or jump to their conclusions if you don’t want to go through it all.

This is one of five new phones that joined the Amazon Prime line-up including the latest Motorola Moto E (4th gen), the Alcatel Idol 5S, and a couple more. It looks like “Blu” may be getting “punished” for their China “phone home” issue, as there are no new Blu phones added to the line-up?

Free Hand Delivery and 1 Hour Flight Training with DJI Spark for $500 [select US metro areas]

The new DJI Spark will be released to the world on June 15 in 2017. If you’d like to receive it in person and receive a 1-hour FREE flight training, and want to buy the “Alpine White” color scheme, the official DJI store is offering these two freebies for the regular price of $500. The hand delivery and free flight training are only available in eight big metro areas in the USA: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and San Francisco. You also receive a free 16GB microSD card 🙂

If you don’t want the Alpine color scheme, or don’t want hand delivery, or you are not in those eight metro areas, you can pre-order it for $500 with a June 15 release at various retailers including Amazon itself and various other sellers.

NOTE that DJI is a Chinese company, and as it is often the case with Chinese products, a number of the online sellers offering their products directly or through marketplaces (like Amazon, eBay and such) are based in China. If you are not familiar with a particular seller, do not assume that they ship from the USA. Make sure you check before buying!

6pk of 100 Watt Equivalent LED A21 Light Bulbs for $18 (Daylight) or $19 (Soft White)

If you are looking for 100 Watt Equivalent A21 LED light bulbs, and don’t need to receive them yesterday, Amazon has a pre-order sale on their upcoming 6-packs in the Daylight Color (5000 Kelvin; 1400 lumens) for $18.26, and in the Soft White Color (2700 Kelvin, 1300 lumens) for $19.24. They are rated 15,000 hours per light bulb.

The 2-packs are shipping but the 6-packs are currently in pre-order status. Amazon’s pricing is so crazy that the 2-packs cost more (!) than the 6-packs, eg a 2-pack of 100W Daylight goes for $22.49, but a 6-pack goes for $18.26. You also get to keep the sturdy cardboard container the 6-pack comes in ~ see gallery picture #3 over there.

A “Clear” light bulb option (2700 Kelvin, 1000 lumens) is available in the listing, but it’s neither available at 100W, nor it is on sale on par with the other two options.

Pre-order new Nikon W300 elementproof P&S camera

Another new elementproof/waterproof digital camera emerged, as these cannot be easily replicated by smartphones. It is the new Nikon Coolpix W300 P&S digital camera, available in three different colors, with a pre-order price of $390 at Amazon and B&H Photo.

This poor camera hasn’t even come out yet, and it’s getting trolled in yet another daily bloviation at The Verge 🙂

Orderable Again: Samsung Chromebook PRO for $550

If you are a boldly going early adopter, the Samsung Chromebook PRO is orderable again for $550 at Amazon by Amazon itself. It had returned a few days ago but then quickly became un-orderable again. But as of the time of writing, this is orderable again in the all-encompassing “temporarily out of stock” status.

The difference between this and the $436 PLUS model is that the PRO has an Intel processor versus ARM of the PLUS.

More details on what caused the delays and their plans for the future of the ChromeOS + Android marriage can be found in this Google I/O 2017 Verge post. It turns out the delays were a mix of software and hardware:

“The Chromebook Pro hardware itself needed to be redesigned. Issues with the thermals and antennas meant some things had to get shifted around. Google itself handles the software stack, so it needed to tweak that software as Samsung tweaked the hardware.”

Of photography interest is the combination of the S-Pen (for retouching and such), touchscreen, combination of Android and ChromeOS apps and options, a 3:2 QHD screen (if you prefer to work in this aspect ratio), and such.

Note however that it may take a few weeks/months before everything gels as Android apps are in Beta. On the plus side, it is on a six week update cycle, so fixes will definitely come faster than they do with Android phones.

If I wasn’t a poor blogger I would scoop this up 🙂 Please feel free to send me one 🙂

Pre-order brand new Surface PRO Tablets ($800 to $2700; 4G LTE Cellular coming later)

Microsoft’s Panay said no new Surfaces a few weeks ago during the Microsoft Educational event, but that was then, this is now! Microsoft is taking a page of the iPad marketing book, and is releasing a new Surface tablet that simply has the name “Surface PRO”, not Surface 5 PRO. So it will probably become the “Surface PRO (2017)” model. Details and specs organized nicely at Techmeme.

The new Surface PRO is now available for pre-order at the official Microsoft store with prices starting at $800 and topping out at $2700. RAM options range from 4GB to 16GB, on-board storage ranges from 128GB to 1TB, processors range from m3 to i7. However, not all combinations are available, there are six pre-configurated models at the moment.

These will begin shipping in June 15 (2017). They are eligible for the 10% Academic discounts for people who qualify per Microsoft’s terms (there’s a link there to find out if you qualify ~ requires login).

If you are a fan of Cellular 4G LTE on your Surface devices, there is some hope! 4G LTE models are coming in the future. Dates and prices will be revealed in the future. Patience is a 2G virtue for this 4G LTE device 🙂

NOTE: the Surface PEN is NOT included with this new model (the 2017 model, aka the 5th generation).
