New Sony a6300 and three new serious FE lenses – Pre-orders next Wedn AM

Sony continues with their two-parter announcement/pre-order, instead of the conventional same-day approach. They have revealed a new 24mp APS-C E-mount camera (a6300) along with three FE lenses (24-70 and 70-200 f2.8s and 85/1.4 prime). Pre-orders will be accepted on Wednesday 2/10/16 in the AM. The a6300 body will start at $1000, the 24-70 at $2200, the 85/1.4 at $1800. The 70-200 price is not available yet… These too have been added to the Cameras and Lenses of 2016 tracking page…

Pre-order new Canon 1D X Mark II for $6000

We interrupt the various offers with a new Canon flagship DSLR, the 1D X Mark II, with a body only kit available for pre-order for $6000 at Adorama and B&H Photo.

In parallel, there is an official “Premium Kit” that includes a 64GB Sandisk Extreme PRO CFast 2.0 memory card and USB 3.0 CFast 2.0 card reader. It is available for pre-order for $6300 at B&H Photo and Adorama.

A number of other accessories are coming long with the camera, including the $600 WFT-E8A wireless transmitter, along with various power/battery options, and a focusing screen. You can see all these and place pre-orders at Adorama.

Pre-order new Olympus Pen-F for $1200

It’s the universal law of film camera name revival. The longer digital runs, the more film camera names and designs will be brought back. And sure enough, the Olympus Pen-F with a 20mp M43rds sensor is now a real thing, available for pre-order in either black or silver-black color schemes for $1200 at Amazon and Adorama and B&H Photo.

Coming along with and for the Pen-F is a $130 Metal Grip and a $50 Jacket Grip [corrected both links!]. But that’s not all in the way of accessories. Olympus is also going into Leica territory with a $500 Premium Leather bag and $150 leather wrapping cloth. Which means smart Etsy artists/sellers can make a nice profit by making more affordable lux-accessories for the Pen-F 🙂

This has been added to the Serious Cameras and Lenses of 2016 page which already looks like a respectable starting line-up with two Nikon flagship FX/DX dSLRs, a Fuji flagship mirrorless, a 100mp (“real” megapixels) medium format camera, a smartphone with a flat “real” optical zoom, a more affordable Big Sensor Prime, and a Leica collector’s dream, an element-proof body. Because some of those display cases are not 100% proof against dust and moisture and nano-particles and cosmic radiation 😉

Pre-order ASUS ZenFone Zoom (3x optical) for $400

Optical zoom lenses have had a hard time breaking out in non-superzoom camera-phones, but ASUS is trying their hand at it with the new ASUS ZenFone, and this creature, unlocked with 64GB on-board storage and a 3x flat-ish optical zoom lens (4-11mm f/2.7-4.8) is now available for pre-order for $400 at B&H Photo. This is model ZX551ML-23-4G64G-BK, with Android 5.x, a generous 4GB RAM, Intel Atom Ant Z3580 processor, 5.5-inch iPS Gorilla Glass 4 1920 x 1080 screen, microSD slot, and things like that. This looks like an actual phone, unlike the various Samsung superzoom Android phones that look more like travel-zoom digital cameras than phones.

Pre-order Fuji X-E2S body for $700 (or w/18-55 for $1000)

The camera upgrade cycle continues with Fuji revealing an “S” version of the Fuji X-E2, the new X-E2S. I am not sure why companies keep insisting on using a final “s” in model name because that’s confusing both in terms of plural and possessive. But camera manufacturers are not under the juristiction of the Grammar Police, so they can get away with it 🙂 The X-E2S is available for pre-order in two options (body only for $700 or with the 18-55mm f2.8-4 R LM OIS for $1000), in either black or silver-black color schemes. Pre-order new Tokina 14-20mm f2 DX for $900 (C/N)

It’s pre-orderin’ time, and not a typo, it’s f2 as in f2.0 as in f-two. The new Tokina 14-20mm f2 DX PRO AT-X is available for pre-order for $900 at Adorama in the Canon mount and the Nikon mount. The Canon mount is expected to come out early February, while the Nikon mount in early March. The credit cards are charged when the item ships, not when you place the pre-order. Happy f-two-oooing.

Pre-order new Canon SX540 HS ($400) and SX420 IS ($300) superzooms [no RAW]

While the new Panasonic superzooms are coming with RAW out of the box, Canon’s CES 2016 camera were RAWless. They revealed new Elphs along with the two superzooms without RAW. They are:

New to US market: Sony a68 SLT coming in early 2016

The Sony a68 SLT was announced by Sony Europe a few weeks ago. Now it has also been officially announced by Sony USA. It will be here by April 2016. It will be available as either a Body Only or with the 18-55 lens ($700). The body only price has not been revealed yet… Pre-orders are not available as of the time of writing. Flagship Pre-order: Surface Book with 1TB SSD for $3200

For early adopters who like to have the absolute flagship products, the official Microsoft Store is accepting pre-orders for the flagship Surface Book, the one with 1TB SSD and 16GB RAM and i7 processor and nVidia graphics and such. The pre-order price is flagship-y too, $3200, with a late January 2016 release estimate. In comparison, the 512GB SSD model goes for $2700 with a 7-8 weeks release estimate.

Of photography interest, the Surface Pen technology, the SSD, the 16GB RAM, the 1TB storage, the Core i7 processor, 3000 x 2000 resolution on a 13.5-inch PixelSense touchscreen, usable in laptop and tablet mode, and such.

New Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4 SLR Lens (C/N) – price/pre-orders not yet

This is a pre-preorder alert. Another day, another new Zeiss lens. This time it is in the land of (D)SLRs, the new Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4, will be available in the Canon EF and Nikon F mounts. Price and release estimate are not available yet.
