Thursday: PROGRADE CFExpress, Pixel 7 & 7a

Thurs-day is PRO-Grade day at the Adorama daily deals:

+ 160GB Prograde CFexpress Type-A 2.0 for $249

+ 2pk of 325GB Prograde CFexpress Type-B 2.0 for $540

MEANwhile the headliner of the post-Prime-Dayz Amazon Gold Box is a Kindle ebook sale with nearly 200 options, because Amazon wants you to start e-filling-up your new Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets 🙂

Of Google Pixel interest, the Pixel 7a goes for $450, while the Pixel 7 goes for $500 (128GB) or $600 (256GB). These are for all shoppers, not Prime-exclusive.

The Pixels are eligible for Amazon’s optional Trade-In promotion that can get you up to $400 in Amazon gift card credit, depending the old device you are trading in, its condition and things like that.

Pre-Order the NEW Google Pixel 7a with CHOICE of FREEBIE

Yesterday, surprisingly at the very end of the 2-hour long Google I/O Keynote, Google revealed their brand new Google Pixel 7a mid-range “Pure Android” phone with a price of $499! And the wait is not long, because pre-orders are already accepted!

And you have a choice of FREEBIES! If you buy it from The Google Store directly, you get FREE Pixel Buds A-series AND a limited edition phone case.

If you are not interested in that, or want to decide what freebie to buy, Amazon is offering a FREE Amazon $50 Gift Card on purchases until 5/21/23 at 11:59pm PT or earlier if sold out.

It may have a mid-range price, but you get the Tensor G2 chip, 8GB RAM, unlocked (with Google Fi option), wireless charging, extreme battery saver (promises 72 hours), Google One VPN, 6.1″ FHD up to 90Hz, etc, etc, etc…

Google Pixel 3 XL (64GB, unlocked) for $200

If you are looking for a budget pure Android phone that gets Android 12 but will not get any future OS updates, and you are not tempted by the boiling hot hype machine of the Google Pixel 6 ($600+ for the regular, $900+ for the PRO), then you may be interested in this limited time sale at B&H Photo, it is the new condition carrier-unlocked (T-Mobile Unlocked phone, works with CDMA and GSM) Google Pixel 3 XL (64GB, Just Black) on sale for $200 with free US shipping.

Note that the Pixel 3 will stop getting updates after October 2021 (as of the time of writing = NOW) per the Google help page. All Pixel phones before the Pixel 6 get three years of guaranteed OS and security updates. Starting with the Pixel 6, the security updates increase to five years. The OS updates remain at three years.

PS: for those not familiar with the Pixel line, keep in mind that there’s no microSD card and the non-a models do not have a headphone jack.

Pre-order the all new Pixel 6 phones for $599 or $899 [PRO] with FREE Pixel Buds

Google has just revealed their new Pixel 6 flagship phones and they priced them at old-school flagship prices. The actual flagship is the Pixel 6 PRO model going for $899 and for a limited time you can get free Google Pixel Buds at the B&H Photo pre-order page. The Google Store page is currently getting hammered as the hype machine is building steam for the phone.

Meanwhile the standard Pixel 6 (B&H Photo) is pre-orderable for $599 with the free Google Pixel Buds.

The above prices are for the 128GB models. The 256GB models go for $100 more on either options. As of the time of writing B&H only offers the 128GB models.

With the Pixel 6 models, Google is offering a minimum of five years of security updates.

The PRO flagship has an insane 12GB RAM, which cannot be found on most Windows computers LOL.

Google said during the live-stream that October 28 is the official release date…

More details on these and unboxings can be found on your favorite tech and smartphone websites and YouTubes and TikToks 🙂

UPDATE: meanwhile at the official Google USA store the Pixel 6 PRO models in the Unlocked option are already sold-out, while some of the options remain in the “Google FI” option. I did not check the Verizon option… The Pixel 6 standard model is not sold out because the HYPE MACHINE is roaring mainly for the PRO model.

Saturday: 512GB microSDXC cards, Pixel 3, Etc

If 512GB microSDXC cards are your thing, there’s a Woot peripherals sale with two of them:

+ 512GB Kingston microSDXC for $54

+ 512GB PNY Elite microSDXC for $88

Among the other Woot daily deals for Saturday 4/10/21 there’s the new condition Google Pixel 3 (64GB, Not Pink) going for $170, fully-unlocked, with a 1-year manufacturer warranty, up to three per customer.

The importance of the Pixel 3 is that it is the oldest (aka cheapest) Pixel phone to be getting Android 12 (Developer Preview already available) per the Google Support page. The cut-off point for the Pixel 3 models is October 2021. For a quick refresher on the Pixel phones, try the Wikipedia page

And for those of you participating in the Lucky’s Rewards program, this weekend’s B&M freebie is “BodyArmor Edge”, a caffeine + electrolytes type of a drink. I haven’t tried it and from the looks of the bottle, this looks more like something you’d put in an automobile engine 😉

UPDATE: the new NewEgg dailies have been revealed, and they have Acer monitors, an HP Chromebook and 64GB Team microSD among others…

Meanwhile at the Amazon USA Gold Box for Saturday they have a couple of selfie-rings and a square lighting panel among the NexiGo webcam sales… Also part of the dailies is a JBL Flip 4 speaker and various AmazFit fitness trackers and smartwatches (over 25 options)…

UPDATE #2 the latest Adorama daily deal (changes Sunday 10am ET) is a 50-pack of 3-ply disposable masks for $6…

Pixel 3a drops to $279, 3a XL drops to $319

Rumors of the upcoming Pixel 4a smartphone are swirling across the universe, but if you don’t want to wait, B&H Photo is having a sale on the current generation, the Pixel 3a. The standard 3a model goes for $279 in various colors, while the larger Pixel 3a XL goes for $319…

Picking a phone these days is hard if you are not predisposed to particular brands or features (eg S-Pen). Let’s not forget the Pocophone F2 PRO is coming too starting at $500!

Google Pixel 4 for $500+, Pixel 4 XL for $600+

The ghosts of the Nexus phones are haunting the Pixel 4, but if you’ve read the reviews, pixel-peeped the sample pictures, and you are certain the Pixel 4* line is the one for you, for a limited time B&H Photo is having discounts on select Pixel 4 phones as follows:

+ Pixel 4: 64GB for $500, 128GB for $600

+ Pixel 4 XL: 64GB for $600, 128GB for $700

These are new condition, factory unlocked, with USA warranty. B&H includes a free case and Mint Mobile SIM card.

NOTE that the Pixel 4 phones do NOT have a headphone jack, and they do NOT have a microSD slot. But you can swim in the Google Clouds 🙂

A lot of people consider the Pixel 4 to have the most pure camera, but not all agree. For example, it is currently at #19 in the DxoMark rankings which have two of the new Honor *30* phones in the Top 5. SPOILER ALERT: the #1 in the ranking is a …LEICA 🙂

NOTE that the latest Huaweii P40* series of phones do NOT have Google Play because of the Huaweii embargo thing. If you look in the forums, there are various hacks that come and go, but come on, it’s 2020, who wants to hunt and peck hacks just so you can run basic apps on your phone?

I remember doing this ten years ago with a crappy Pandigital (?) tablet I got on sale at Radio Shaq. No way I would do this now, there are a gazillion other phones available. But that’s just me. Some people love the excitement of living on the Google Play Frontier 🙂

In-Stock NOW: Google Pixel 3a for $299, 3a XL for $379

Per the Deals Fairness Doctrine (TM), since we’ve been posting iOS/Apple deals left and right, we must needs post something Android as well, and as fate would have it, Google’s brand new Pixel 3a models are now in-stock and shipping at B&H Photo! The Pixel 3a standard model goes for $299 while the XL model goes for $379.

Unlike the iPhones, the only option here is on the body color. The “3a” has a modest 5.6″ 18.5:9 OLED with Snapdragon 670, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, Bluetooth 5.0, Android 9 and *GASP* a headphone jack 🙂 The “3a XL” [they really need to work on the naming-numbering scheme] has a 6-inch screen. Free unlimited storage on Google Photos is included along with three years of OS and security updates.

UPDATE: per the “Post Saving Doctrine”, to save up on having an additional short post, B&H is also having a sale on various computer monitors as more and more people are working from home and may need more or better monitors…

The silver lining of the Corona-mandated “work from home” is an opportunity for many companies and individuals and cities and states to study work from home ideas and programs to further reduce traffic and congestion in places where it’s impossible not to be in a traffic jam always and forever and ever!

Tue: Corel software, refurbished Google Pixels

There is a software sale among the Tuesday 12/10/19 daily deals at the Best Buy website and among the offers are the following potentially interesting titles:

+ Corel Video Studio Ultimate 2019 for $35

+ Corel Draw Home and Student Suite 2019 for $60

+ and you can party like it’s the previous century with the Wordperfect WordPress Office Suite for $40
+ daily reminder: George R. R. Martin is writing the A Song of Ice and Fire book series using Wordstar on MS-DOS
+ CORRECTION: Wordperfect, not WordPress; Thanks to SA for the correction email!

Meanwhile at Woot there is a refurbished Google Pixels sale featuring Pixel 2 and 3 models at both sizes (regular and XL) with prices ranging from $150 to $390. They come with a 90-day Woot warranty…

Pre-order new Pixel 4 and 4 XL and get a $100 Gift Card

If you are a fan of the Pixel smartphones, B&H Photo is running a limited time pre-order promotion on the just-announced Google Pixel 4 phones. They include a $100 B&H electronic gift card with pre-orders! There’s no coupon code, the e-gift card is included automatically with the pre-orders.

Depending on your viewport/screen, the free items may not be very visible. Look for the tiny text that says “Includes Free”. Also included is a 3-month prepaid Mint Mobile SIM card that’s why you may see “2 items ($160.00 value)” instead of just the $100 B&H e-gift card.

Prices for the Pixel 4 start at $799 (64GB) and jump to $899 for the 128GB option.

Prices for the Pixel 4 XL start at $899 (64GB) and jump to $999 for the 128GB option.

Estimated shipping date for the Pixel 4 models is October 22 in 2019. It’s a Oh So Orange Just Black and Clearly White Tuesday 😉

Also available for pre-ordering but not including a $100 B&H gift card are the new Pixelbook Go laptops. Scroll further down the listings to find the preorder options. For now they appear to have a “Ships to USA only” restriction. Prices start at $649 for the Intel m3 and increase as memory, storage and processor increase…

Flash sale: Pixel 3 for $400, Pixel 3 XL for $450 with Financing or Project Fi Activation [also new Project Fi Unlimited Plan]

The official online Google Store is running a couple of flash sale promotions for a limited time. The offers get you the new condition Pixel 3 smartphone for $400 or the Pixel 3 XL for $450. One offer is with Project-FI activation, while the other offer is with a 24-month financing plan. The FI store offers a financing option but you can also pay the phone right away at the $400/$450 price. As usual with these financing offers, check the terms, conditions and restrictions before jumping in.

NOTE however that Google has officially announced October 15 in 2019 as their big reveal date for their new Pixel phone (presumable the Pixel 4 line), so factor that in your decision…

A lot of other phones came out since the Pixel 3 was announced in the Fall of 2018 and as you can see at the Smartphone Rankings at Dxomark the Pixel 3 have “dropped” in the charts, just outside the Top 15. It should go without saying that an aggregate test score is by no means a complete evaluation of a device’s performance so be sure to read up on things if interested….

NEW GOOGLE FI Unlimited
The above offers are coinciding with the announcement of the Project Fi Unlimited plan for $70/month but it is about as unlimited as the big carriers as it slows down to 256kbps after 22GB during the month. If you prefer to continue at high speed, you can pay $10/GB on the traffic above 22GB.

The prices per line improve as you add lines/people to the plan. Two lines are $60/line/mo, three lines are $50/line/mo, four (or more) lines are $45/line/mo. The 22GB limit applies per individual line, not for the whole plan. Depending on one’s situation, this may or may not beneficial ~ eg adding a 2nd line instead of using a separate mobile hotspot. Or you can buy a data SIM and use a 2nd phone but on a single line (it will still eat up data but won’t pay for an extra line ~ for phone calls though, you have to hack it through Voice/Hangouts – it’s been a while since I did this, I don’t remember the details).

NOTE also that video streaming with Unlimited is down to 480p (DVD quality), but mobile hotspot is allowed (again within the aggregate phone-data + hotspot 22GB/line/month).

Google Pixel 3a XL + $100 Gift Card for $479

For a very limited time only, B&H Photo is offering the new condition Google Pixel 3a XL smartphone bundled with a $100 B&H Photo gift card and a GoogleFi SIM card (with $10 service credit), all together for $479 with free US shipping in your choice of three color schemes…

The Pixel 3a gets almost the same camera score (one point difference) at DxoMark. But since the Pixel 3 came out last year, a number of newer smartphones came out that scored higher on Dxomark with the Huawei P30 PRO and the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G leading the way.

Needless to say, the Dxomark is just one measurement of camera performance as the real-world often disagrees with the lab-world 😉

Wedn: refurbished Pixel 3 XL (128GB, Verizon Unlocked) for $520

The headliner of the Wednesday Woot-Landia deals is the refurbished Google Pixel 3 XL (128GB, Verizon Unlocked, “Just Black”, 90 day Woot warranty) for $520 with free shipping for Prime members or $6 flat shipping for others.

But if the The Verge is to be trusted, the all new Huawei P30 PRO defeats the Pixel 3 in low light photography… The P30 PRO is currently the new #1 at the DxoMark Mobile score but it is not the #1 in the Selfies score, where the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus reigns supreme…

Meanwhile among the Best Buy dailies there’s a $900 SSD i7 Dell Inspiron laptop (15.6″, 4K Touch, 16GB RAM, Nvidia 940MX, 512GB SSD, Windoze)…

PS: per the Dxomark main page, they are hiring 20+ people…

Free Pixelbook Pen with Pixelbooks (all three options in-stock)

At the moment, the Pixelbooks at Amazon come with a FREE Pixelbook Pen ($99 price), in other words, you pay the same price whether you get the bundle with or without the Pixelbook Pen. This is available in the “i5, 8 GB RAM, 128GB” for $999, and the “i5, 8 GB RAM, 256GB” for $1199. But that’s not all, the “i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB)” is also in-stock for $1649 and participating in this promotion. With free shipping.

Google Pixelbook + $50 Gift Card + 6 months of Netflix for $899

The early bird catches the Pixelbook! The new condition Google Pixelbook (i5, 8GB, 128GB) is on sale for $899 (instead of starting price of $999) at Amazon by Amazon itself with up to three per customer at the sale price. But that’s not all, you also get a FREE $50 Amazon Gift Card. Simply add both the Pixelbook and the $50 gift card to the shopping cart and proceed to checkout. While this offer is running, the price of the gift card will be automatically deducted by the shopping cart.

This only applies to the Pixelbooks sold and shipped by Amazon itself – as it is often the case with these type of promotions. You can find the offer mentioned under the “Special offers and product promotions” part of the product page.

The bundle with the Pixelbook Pen is also discounted by $100 but does not get the $50 Amazon gift card. But fear not, you can buy the Pixelbook Pen on its own for $99, which is the difference between the two bundles anyway.

256GB PIXELBOOK
UPDATE: this dropped to $1100…

The 256GB Pixelbook is discounted too, from $1200 to $1100 [WAS $1120] and it is also eligible for the FREE $50 Amazon Gift Card. The bundle with the Pixelbook Pen goes for $99 more and does not get the free gift card, so if interested you can buy the Pixelbook Pen on its own for $99…

PRIME STUDENTS
IF you are a PRIME STUDENT, they have a promotion that gets you 10% off. I don’t have a Prime Student account, so I can’t test it.

AFTER YOU RECEIVE THE LAPTOP

The above are what Amazon gives you. After you receive the laptop and activate it, and BEFORE 12/31/17, you can get the FREE Chromebook Offers. The Pixelbook is eligible for:

+ 6 months of Netflix (a $66~ store credit)
+ two years of additional 100GB Google Drive
+ $60 game currency for the Asphalt 8 game

ALTERNATIVES

This is currently sold-out: For about half the price of the Pixelbook, you can get the Samsung Chromebook PRO which we mentioned a couple of days ago and it continues to be in-stock. The PLUS continues to be out of stock.

IF you prefer Chromebooks from other than these companies, there are a few more that participate in the $50 Gift Card promotion as well…

$300 off the LG V30 or Google Pixel 2s with 24mo Verizon Installment Plan

Two of the top Android cameraphones at the moment are having a promotion running at Verizon Wireless. The promotion is a $300 off promo credit when you purchase either the LG V30 or the Pixel 2s (Pixel 2 or 2 XL) with a 24-month installment plan. The discount will be a monthly discount during each one of the 24 months. At the end of the 24 months, you will have a $300 off discount on the phone price. You own the phone at the end of the 24 months, it is not a lease. Credit check and Verizon plan required for this.

The discount is not available on an outright purchase of the phones. Only when purchased with a 24-month installment plan. These are the “Nu Contracts” 🙂

As usual, check terms, conditions, restrictions, etc before buying.

Pre-order new Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL phones

The new Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones crash-landed at the very top of the Dxomark Mobile Rankings with a score of 98, topping the camera modules of the latest iPhones and Galaxies [iPhone X not measured yet since it’s not released yet]. Check further down the DxoMark page if you want to see the bar-chart and pros/cons summary.

These new phones are now available for pre-ordering at the official Google Store and also at Project Fi and also at Verizon Wireless with an optional trade-in promotion up to $300.

Prices are $649 (64GB) and $749 (128GB) for the Pixel 2, and $850 (64GB) and $950 (128GB) for the Pixel 2 XL.

All of these early pre-orders qualify for a free “Google Home Mini” (the new donut shaped one, priced $49 brand new).

PS: speaking of smartphones, the previous generation Sony XZ (unlocked, USA warranty, 32GB) is on sale for $350 in two different colors by Amazon herself.

Google Pixel Book invades Amazon

One of the brand new Google products announced yesterday [you can re-live our live-tweeting of the event if you have already finished reading the Yellow Pages] is now available for purchase at one of Google’s current bitter frenemy rivals, Amazon! The two i5 versions of the Google Pixel Book (2017) are available for pre-ordering for $999 (i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB) or for $1199 for the 256GB storage version. Amazon’s release date estimate for these is October 31st.

The third model is not available for pre-order yet, not even at the Google Store where it reveals the price of the i7 model (16GB RAM, 512GB storage), it is $1649. That’s $650 more than the base model.

Note that the PixelBook Pen is NOT included with the devices. You have to purchase it separately for $99.

Needless to say, you can get a better value with other ChromeOS devices [eg Samsung Chromebook PRO for $500] or Windows laptops, this is more of a prestige flagship in the world of Chrome OS and ChromeDroid. During the keynote they showed someone using the Adobe Lightroom Android app on this to do their lightrooming.

CRACKPOT THEORY

Another interesting thing that could potentially have Google go head to head with Samsung in 2018 or beyond: the development of the stylus pen for the PixelBook could also make its way into the Pixel smartphone line.

So perhaps the Pixel Ultra “meeting” that was teased by Google employees during the Keynote is actually this: a Pixel phone with a PixelBook Pen, a direct competitor to the Galaxy Note 8 line! Or that “Ultra” could have been a sly shot at the “iPhone X”.

Pre-order new Google Pixel Book starting at $999

If you missed our live-tweeting of the Google Pixel 2017 event, you can relive it with a Twitter thread. Some of the products revealed are already available for pre-ordering at B&H Photo as follows:

+ Google PixelBook for $999 (i5, 8GB, 128GB) or $1200 (256GB)
+ the i7 is not priced yet, so it cannot be pre-ordered

+ Google Home Mini for $49

+ the Google Home MAX is not available for pre-ordering yet

Google Pixel (Verizon Wireless) for 24 monthly $10/mo installments [or Pixel XL for 24 monthly $20/mo]

Since smartphone cameras have improved dramatically over the years, I will now also include them under the “Other Cameras” umbrella blog-category.

Which brings us to a flagship smartphone promotion, Verizon Wireless is offering the new condition 32GB Google Pixel smartphone on a 24-month installment plan for $10 per month for 24 months on an installment plan. The total price you would pay over the 24 months is $240. This is done using 24 monthly bill credits that bring the price down. You are billed $27.08 per month (the phone’s regular price) but you get $17.08 bill credits monthly, making it $10 per month. It’s basically a faux-contract of sorts… Also eligible for the promotion is the 128GB version which comes out to $15 per month for 24 months after the bill credits. You can adjust colors and storage size on that listing…

Meanwhile the larger 32GB Pixel XL is offered for $20 per month for 24 months, in a similarly structured promotion. The 128GB Pixel XL goes for $25 per month.

UPDATE: the same $10 per month for 24 months on an Installment plan is also offered for the Samsung Galaxy S7.
