Weekend Sale: Four Photo Mags for $4.80 each per year (including Digital Photo PRO and VideoMaker)

These days a “Fall Sale” has became a polite stand-in for Black Friday and Thanksgiving sale but it’s a bit too early (about two months) to utter those words. So the nudge-nudge is a fall sale and this is a good one for the weekend at DiscountMags as each one of the four camera-n-photo magazines they typically feature is on sale for $4.80 per magazine per year. The titles are:

+ Digital Photo PRO (mayhaps it’s lowest price ever at DiscoMags?)
+ VideoMaker
+ Outdoor Photographer
+ Digital Photo

Each one is $4.80 per magazine per year and good for renewals, new-subs or gift-subs. You can adjust the options for each magazine individually. These are printed magazines that can be shipped to US addresses only.

As usual, various other “six degrees of separation (from photography)” magazines are participating in the $4.80/mag/year sale including Popular Science, Wired, Backpacker, Homes & Gardens, Arch. Digest, Conde Nast Traveler, Dreamscapes and plenty of fashion-n-lifestyle magazines include VOGUE, Cosmo, GQ, and of course Bridal Guide and various sports.

The four camera and photo magazines are at the very bottom of the page ~ or you can get to them by clicking on the “Photography” tab below the harvest-banner at the top of the weekend sale page

Saturday: refurbished Canon 6D body only for $1100

New Amazon Feature: FREE Samples (not just Prime members)

If you had been a regular Amazon shopper, you may have noticed and participated in some of the more complicated ways Amazon was using to giveaway free samples (store credit promotions, etc). Now they’ve decided to simplify things even further. They have launched the Amazon Product Sampling feature that lets any Amazon shopper (not restricted to Prime members) to sign up and receive free product samples. The freebies will be sent to your default address, so make sure your default address is the one you want the samples to arrive at (mayhaps they are doing this to prevent abuse of the freebies?).

To join the program, you go to the Preferences page [link in the page above] and select the product categories you are interested in and save the choices to your Amazon account. You cannot select individual products, products will be randomly sent to you as determined by randomness and/or-probably Amazon’s ever-evolving-and-devolving AI πŸ™‚

Joining this may put you in Amazon’s AI good graces and that may lead to invitations to participate in other more interesting Amazon programs and services ~ although this is pure speculation and there’s no guarantee that anything will come out of this…

This is by invitation, so you must be logged-on to your Amazon account to see if you qualify [see link at the bottom]

You may also notice the banner appearing at the top of Amazon.com pages while you are logged on to your Amazon account if you are eligible for the promotion. The picture below is a screenshot crop of one such banner:

To get this discount you must:

  1. activate the offer in your account [see link below]
  2. you must put a $60+ in eligible products in your shopping cart
  3. you must pay (at least partially) by redeeming AMEX Membership Rewards (the rest will be paid by the AMEX credit card that is linked to the rewards points)

Up to three per customer at the sale price. This is sold and shipped by NewEgg itself. Sale ends at 11:59pm pacific on 9/18/19 or earlier if sold out…

Flash sale: Pixel 3 for $400, Pixel 3 XL for $450 with Financing or Project Fi Activation [also new Project Fi Unlimited Plan]

The official online Google Store is running a couple of flash sale promotions for a limited time. The offers get you the new condition Pixel 3 smartphone for $400 or the Pixel 3 XL for $450. One offer is with Project-FI activation, while the other offer is with a 24-month financing plan. The FI store offers a financing option but you can also pay the phone right away at the $400/$450 price. As usual with these financing offers, check the terms, conditions and restrictions before jumping in.

NOTE however that Google has officially announced October 15 in 2019 as their big reveal date for their new Pixel phone (presumable the Pixel 4 line), so factor that in your decision…

A lot of other phones came out since the Pixel 3 was announced in the Fall of 2018 and as you can see at the Smartphone Rankings at Dxomark the Pixel 3 have “dropped” in the charts, just outside the Top 15. It should go without saying that an aggregate test score is by no means a complete evaluation of a device’s performance so be sure to read up on things if interested….

NEW GOOGLE FI Unlimited
The above offers are coinciding with the announcement of the Project Fi Unlimited plan for $70/month but it is about as unlimited as the big carriers as it slows down to 256kbps after 22GB during the month. If you prefer to continue at high speed, you can pay $10/GB on the traffic above 22GB.

The prices per line improve as you add lines/people to the plan. Two lines are $60/line/mo, three lines are $50/line/mo, four (or more) lines are $45/line/mo. The 22GB limit applies per individual line, not for the whole plan. Depending on one’s situation, this may or may not beneficial ~ eg adding a 2nd line instead of using a separate mobile hotspot. Or you can buy a data SIM and use a 2nd phone but on a single line (it will still eat up data but won’t pay for an extra line ~ for phone calls though, you have to hack it through Voice/Hangouts – it’s been a while since I did this, I don’t remember the details).

NOTE also that video streaming with Unlimited is down to 480p (DVD quality), but mobile hotspot is allowed (again within the aggregate phone-data + hotspot 22GB/line/month).
