In-Stock Oddities: USED New Sony a7r III body for $3200 (updated)

Stranger in a stranger land. Now the same seller has a USED listing through Amazon which says it is brand new. Here’s a screenshot…

This is bizarre, I’d say wait for the more well-known retailers to have it in-stock 🙂

I just updated the Stock Status Tracker and there are some promising news, the camera is shown as in-stock for its starting price of $3200 by seller “Cardinal Photo” through Amazon. This ships directly from Cardinal Photo, and it is not eligible for Prime shipping.

The shipping estimates will vary depending on how near/far you are to the shipping routes as they intersect with Cardinal’s location.

As of a 12/5/17 at 8:33pm ET, the estimate has moved from December 7 to December 18. This is likely because more pre-orders came in to eat up the upcoming inventory or something changed infrastructure-wise (eg delays at the ports and such).

The Sony a7r III body only now has a December 7 estimate (as of the time of writing) at B&H Photo. Keep in mind, estimates can change over time…

Sony a7r III not out yet

If you missed it earlier today, you can rewatch it at any time, the previously mentioned 1-hour 5-person panel by B&H Photo on the Sony a7r III camera.

There was a November 30 in-stock estimated date mentioned a couple of weeks ago, before the Black-Cyber Friday-Monday madness began.

The camera itself, as of the time of writing, is not in-stock. At Amazon by Amazon itself it is in the ubiquitous “temporarily out of stock” status. At Adorama it is in pre-order status and so is at B&H Photo. It is currently ranked the #1 new release in Mirrorless Cameras, but before you schedule a victory parade, keep in mind that Amazon’s rankings are only as good as their product categorization and classification :

The Sony a7r II was going for $2900 when I posted the Mirrorless Price Charts two weeks ago, but the combination of the impending release of the a7r III and the various Instant Savings offers have dropped its price down to $2400 and that’s not all, you also get free items with purchase!

At B&H Photo, you have a choice of serious freebies: either a 4TB WD MyPassport External HDD or a free 1-Year Photographer Creative Cloud subscription.

Reminder, lost in the Black Friday madness: the new deputy of the Sony E-system, coming in at $3200 [see Mirrorless Price Charts], the Sony a7r III is scheduled to be released on Thursday November 30 in 2017 with pre-orders accepted at Amazon by Amazon actual and Adorama and B&H Photo.

I will integrate it in the Stock Status Tracker after Cyber Monday madness cools off.

If you are not mesmerized by the a7r III or its starting price, there are sales on the a7S II, for $2500 you can get it with the Rokinon 35/2.8 FE or for $2400 you can get the a7S II body only.

This is the first time I noticed this is in-stock, I’m not sure when it became in-stock in the first place. It is Sony’s RX0, an elementproof action camera with a 1-inch sensor and RAW support. It is in-stock at its starting price of $700 at Adorama and B&H Photo and Amazon where a 3rd-party seller (K&M Camera Store) is offering a bundle for the same price with various free accessories (64GB SD, case, etc) with the orders fulfilled by Amazon.

PSA: Sony RX1 and RX1R starting to disappear

The Sony RX1 and RX1R 35mm full frame fixed lens cameras are starting to disappear from retailers. Both are gone from Adorama (RX1R and RX1R), while at B&H Photo both cameras are marked as “Special Order” (2-4 weeks) for both the RX1 and the RX1R.

As of the time of writing, both the RX1 and the RX1R remain readily available at Amazon but each camera has a limit of up to three per customer. The price remains at $2400 as you can see at the Fixed Lens Cameras charts of last week.

Of course the used cameras won’t magically disappear. You can get it used for less than half the price, it is available in “USED – Bargain” condition for $1199 at KEH Camera with a 180-day warranty from KEH Camera.

One of the older ones, the Sony a7r body only currently goes for $1900 in new condition at authorized dealers, but it looks like a 3rd-party seller has triggered Amazon’s own price bots to drop the price to $1848 sold and shipped by Amazon itself. Sony is doing the Apple thing with two phase announcements. Today they revealed their new Sony a7 III camera ($3200) and 24-105 f4 G OSS FE lens ($1300). Pre-orders for these begin on Thursday. I will post a new post once they become available for pre-ordering. Sony is also developing a 400mm f2.8 GM OSS lens, but there is no price for this lens, so it may not be available for pre-ordering tomorrow.
