July 2017 Price Chart Series: The 35mm Full Frame Cameras
It is finally here! A new “Price Chart” series has began! We just posted the 35mm Full Frame Digital Cameras Price Chart for July 2017, with prices taken today (July 3, 2017). We will have about one of these per day for the rest of the week. Next up are APS-C DSLRs, then Mirrorless cameras, and finally Fixed Lens Cameras.
To celebrate the launch of this brand new new Price Chart, we created a new Full Frame Deals category here at this blog [see unnecessarily long explanation]. This explains the number of 35mm FF camera deals that got posted earlier today 🙂
Save the Date: 7/9/17 Giveaway Prize is Nikon D3400
Just like Black Friday starts a couple of weeks before the actual Black Friday, Prime Day seems to be extending backwards in time as well. Amazon is running daily giveaways in the run-up to Prime Day, and on Sunday 7/9/17 (one week before Game Of Thrones Season 7 begins), the giveaway will be the Nikon D3400 in black or red. This is shown in the Giveaway schedule in the Amazon app when you click on the giveaway notification.
Entering the Giveaway is Simple
You can enter any or all the available giveaways. Entering is simple, you watch a very short Amazon video (promoting various Prime features), then click on a yellow “Continue” button, and then you are presented with a bouncing box. You click on the box, and their computer will inform you whether you won or not. The screenshot below is for a current giveaway item for a CD from an indie British band…
Resurrection Ship: Sony SLT-A99V Body for $1998
The Cylon DSLR Resurrection must be in orbit, hiding on the dark side of the moon, because the good old Sony a99V body only SLT dSLR has re-materialized at Amazon by Amazon itself in “temporarily out of stock” status. This is of interest only to those who may have been specifically hunting for this particular camera in new condition. It is a 2012 model.
PS: this post may appear random and out of the blue ~ there is a reason for it ~ this camera surfaced while I was price-checking cameras for the upcoming July 2017 edition of the “Price Charts” 🙂
New Blog Category: 35mm Full Frame Deals
Since we have now a rather robust selection of 35mm full frame cameras, in DSLR, mirrorless, rangefinder and fixed lens cameras, and since 35mm full frame has a historical significance in the world of photography, I created a brand new blog category (WordPress “tag”) for fans of 35mm full frame. The Full Frame Deals tag will be used on all cameras that have a 35mm full frame sensor.
PS: I am not going to go back and tag every single camera mentioned through the years. This new tag covers cameras since the Canon 6D Mark II announcement last week.
PS2: errors and miscategorizations are expected given the volume of posts, so on occasion some cameras may not be tagged or some non-35mmFF may get accidentally tagged. If you see any of those, please let me know (I love corrections!). If you see a blog error, the chances are that I don’t know about it. And if I don’t know about it, the chances of it getting corrected are zero 🙂 Thanks! 🙂
PS3: “full frame deals” is easier to type and easier for the WordPress tag auto-complete to find it (without the need to use the keypad or the numbers row), that’s why it’s not the full (no pun intended) “35mm Full Frame Deals” 🙂
PS4: I am not sure how I managed to complicate a one-sentence blog announcement 🙂
Sony a7 Body (first gen) for $948
We haven’t mentioned this milestone on this blog yet, but thanks to a $50 instant savings promotion, we officially have a 35mm full frame interchangeable lens camera in new condition at authorized dealers going for under $1000. It is the Sony a7 body only (first generation), going for $948 with free shipping at Amazon by Amazon itself (limit 3) and at B&H Photo and Adorama.
Pentax K-1 Body for $1791 [limit 3]
A silver lining of Amazon’s Price Bots is that sometimes they can price-match 3rd-party sellers without “grown up” supervision. One such case we have now, the new condition Pentax K-1 body only is going for $1791~ with free shipping at Amazon by Amazon itself with a limit of up to three units per customer. This appears to be a price-bot price-match of the 6ave price. Shhhhh! Don’t tell the Amazon “grown ups” 🙂
Refurbished Nikon D610 Body for $1100
The new condition Nikon D610 body only currently goes for $1500 at authorized dealers, but if you want to buy it refurbished from a well-known and reliable dealer, B&H Photo is currently offering it in refurbished condition for $1100 with free shipping and a 90-day warranty. The listing does not specify whether it’s a B&H or Nikon warranty.
Leica SL (Typ 601) Mirrorless for $5995
Work has began to start another “Price Charts” series. As I am assembling the lists and price-checking cameras, a number of deal posts will be generated. This is the first one. The Leica SL (Typ 601) Mirrorless Digital Camera goes for $7450 at Adorama and by various at Amazon, but as of the time of writing, it appears to be on sale for $5995 with free expedited shipping at B&H Photo.
PS: you can check the previous editions of the “Price Charts” at the Price Charts Archives. I will post separate alerts when the new July 2017 editions are out. I typically try to do one per day, and start and finish them within the same week, since manufacturer-initiated prices usually change on Sundays.
PSA: the eBay Rewards Certificates are here
This is a PSA! The eBay Bucks rewards you may have earned for the month of June are now ready to spend! Check your eBay emails or eBay messages or the relevant part of the eBay website that shows the eBay Bucks. Thanks to the new terms of the program, you don’t have to earn at least $5 per month to spend your rewards. Now any amount is good. The downside of the changes is that they lowered the default earning percentage from 2% to 1%, but they have recurring “Bonus Bucks” promotions.
The new reward certificate expires 8/2/17. If you are looking for ideas on how to spend it, check the eBay Deals along with the Top 100 Trending Deals.
As you can see below, I have a big shopping spree to plan 🙂 Even if the exclamation point I added somehow becomes factorial, it’s still a very small amount 🙂

Used Fuji X-T1 Body for $630, Refurbished X-T1 w/18-55 for $855
If of all the Fuji X system cameras it is the X-T1 body only the one you want, it is currently available in used condition starting at $630 at B&H Photo with free expedited shipping. This is a Condition 9. They also have higher and lower conditions. Make sure to check under the “In the Box” section for each individual used listing to see which ones of the original accessories are included. The included accessories affect price and you may or may not need them depending on what other accessories you already have.
Used products sold at the B&H Photo website come with a 90-day warranty from B&H Photo, not the manufacturer.
On the other hand, if you prefer refurbished, and want the 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 lens as well, the X-T1 with 18-55 kit is offered in Certified Refurbished condition by Dealfisher fulfiled by Amazon for $855~ with free shipping. Since it is fulfilled by Amazon, it is Prime eligible, and it ships from Amazon’s warehouses, which makes potential returns and customer service more streamlined since you deal with Amazon, not the 3rd-party seller.
Note that “certified refurbished” is an Amazon term as it refers to products sold on their website under the “Certified Refurbished” banner. Among others things they offer a minimum of a 90-day warranty. This is Amazon’s Help Page on certified refurbished. And this is a listing of Certified Refurbished products on their website.
Note also that “certified refurbished” does not necessarily mean “manufacturer refurbished” in Amazon’s “certified refurbished” context.

PSA: O’Reilly’s will no longer sell eBooks individually on their website
O’Reilly specializes in technical books and ebooks, including some camera and imaging related (eg Photoshop and LR and such). They were the vanguard of DRM-free ebooks. They are NOT going out of the ebook market, but they will stop selling ebooks individually on their website. They are instead focusing on their Netflix-style subscription service where you can read as much and as many as you want as long as you are a paying subscriber.
Existing O’Reilly purchases will continue to be available. They also have options to download and send-to-cloud your existing ebooks. They will continue to sell ebooks individually through the various online ebookstores (Kindle, etc).
More details and analysis at The Digital Reader, a great website to bookmark and read if you are interested in all things e-publishing and e-reading.
Pay $15, Get $40 to spend through Google Express (new users only)
Speaking of Price Club / Costco (for those not old enough to remember 1993, they merged in 1993), they are among the retailers that are participating in Google Express, along with Fry’s, Tarjay, Staples, etc. For first time Google Express customers, Groupon has a Pay $15, Get $40 to spend thru Google Express promotion. That is a pretty good discount, especially if you can keep your order close to the minimum.
Limit one for you and another one as a gift. The offer is for new Google Express users. I haven’t made a Google Express purchase yet, but I believe tipping for the delivery is expected?
