One Year of Prime + Unlocked Fire Phone for $200

The Fire Phone discount is back at Amazon by Amazon itself. You get one year of Amazon Prime (good for new members or renewals of existing Prime subscriptions) along with the 32GB Fire Phone (GSM, Unlocked, No Contract) for $200 total. One year of Prime costs $100, so essentially you are getting a free unlocked GSM phone for $100. Limit five per customer during this promotion. This is a limited time promotion but they do not specify the expiration date.

UPDATE: speaking of Amazon, the new condition Roku 3 streaming box is on sale for $85.50.

Nikon D5100 w/18-55 DX VR for $400 [Imported / Grey Market]

More eBay Deals action, if you are comfortable with Imported (Grey Market; no manufacturer warranty) cameras, the new condition Nikon D5100 w/18-55 DX VR (Imported/GrayMarket) is offered for $400 with free shipping, with a limit of five per buyer, by eBay seller “bigvalueinc” (98.9%). The seller offers a one year warranty. Not the manufacturer.

There are three newer cameras (D5200, D5300, D5500) in the Nikon D5xxx line-up, so it’s trade-offs and features and price!

Caution when buying on eBay: “1yr US warranty” does not necessarily mean Authorized Dealer

eBay is the wild west of the civilized shopping internet, and as such, one must needs pay more attention to the fineprint of listings, because pretty much everyone can sell on eBay, and the level of professionalism among eBay sellers runs the whole gamut. Even among the featured eBay Deals.

One semi-disturbing trend is that some un-authorized sellers are using tricky language (accidentally or intentionally) when describing the warranty situation. For example, when one reads “1yr US warranty”, they may equate it with a manufacturer’s warranty. But that’s not necessarily so. In some cases, what a seller may be saying is that the seller is physically in the US and they are providing an equivalent warranty to the manufacturer warranty, and the people providing the warranty are residing in the US. But the camera is an import model. Sometimes this is explained further down in the listings, sometimes it is not.

For example, here is an annotated screenshot of a listing of this nature, explaining it:

warranties_and_eBay

Needless to say, the whole authorized dealer status situation is a complicated topic. This post is only intended to help consumers protect themselves from confusing verbiage, it is not intended to be an exhaustive analysis of the situation.

eBay could help the situation if they insist that sellers describe this clearly in the listing title and not bury it in fineprint. For example, if a camera is an import model, write “Imported” or “Grey Market” or something self-explanatory in the product title of the listing.

If you are not sure about the authorized dealer status of a seller, look it up on the manufacturers website, or call the manufacturer’s customer support, or search photography forums or use search engines. The higher the price of an item, the bigger the potential risk.

ADDED: as S. W. Anderson points out in the comments below, paying attention to the reputation and history of the grey market seller/importer is another thing to consider in your risk matrix.

Refurbished Nikon D7100 body for $700

If the price of the brand new Nikon D7200 body only ($1200) is too high, but the good old D7000 ($500~) is deemed too old in DSLR years, one possible way to triangulate between the two is the manufacturer refurbished Nikon D7100, currently on sale as such for $700 with free shipping by Adorama. This is “blessed” by Nikon USA with a 90 day warranty.

Adorama has a number of other refurbished Nikon DSLRs on sale. Peruse the listings looking for prices printed in red ink instead of the usual black ink (on the right side of the page in the aforelinked search listings).

Panasonic GH4 with free Rode mic for $1500

The Panasonic GH4 body only kit is currently bundled with a free Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone for $1500 with 4% promotional rewards (= $60 rewards) at B&H Photo and Adorama. The free item is included automatically while this promotion is running (= you see this offer mentioned on the product page while the promotion is running).

Speaking of the GH4, if you happen to want both the GH4 body only and the FL580L flash, you can save a little bitty bit by buying them together as a bundle for $2000 at the Panasonic Store 3-day sale which ends at the end of day on 3/7/15.

Speaking of Panasonic M43rds, the GF6 with 14-42mm continues to go for $330 by Roberts on Amazon. Amazon’s own price is $340. Used prices by Amazon Warehouse Deals start at $250.
