If you are looking to stock up on Nikon DSLR gear, the manufacturer refurbished Nikon D3100 two lens kit with the 18-55 and 55-200 DX not-VR lenses is offered for $340 with free shipping at Adorama. Keep in mind, this is an older DSLR with older DX kit lenses, which is why it is discounted as such compared to the newer D3xxx DSLRs.
Very good that you emphasized non-VR, because that 55-200mm lens could turn in some disappointing results for an unsuspecting user who bought this deal to move up from a point ‘n’ shoot or phone camera. Actually, it would be good of Adorama to offer/strongly suggest a good, reasonably priced tripod to go with the camera and non-VR lenses.
For anyone who happens by and doesn’t know what VR is, it stands for vibration reduction, or Nikon’s in-lens rendition of image stabilization. IS in some form can be very helpful at the long end of the standard kit zoom. Past that, it’s virtually a necessity for most photographers when working in less than very bright daylight. That’s because just as telephoto lenses magnify distant subjects, they also magnify even the slightest camera movement, resulting in less-than-sharp images. That’s why, absent in-camera or in-lens image stabilization, a decent tripod should be standard equipment for telephotography.
