Back from yet another TypePad outage (transition to Wordpress starts this week)

All apologies for the outage. Unfortunately our beloved independent hosting provider TypePad was hit with yet another major DDoS attack that took most of TypePad out once again. As of late Monday night they are up and running again.

So we are accelerating the "Move to Wordpress" project. We will do this in a flexible way:

1) launch the new blog on Wordpress
2) ask for "Beta Readers" to get first impressions feedback
3) post new updates at the new blog
4) add an RSS Feed Stream of new posts at this blog (TypePad)
5) switch the Feedburner RSS feed to the new Wordpress

So you will be able to see the latest updates whether you use this blog (TypePad) or the new one (Wordpress). This is the most flexible solution I could come up with, so it won't break anyone's bookmarks or links or browser auto-completes. If you have any other ideas or suggestions, please use the online contact form.

Blogs are back after TypePad suffered DDoS attack

The hosting provider for this blog and the main blog (Typepad) got hit with a massive and stubborn DDoS attack during the weekend. They were finally able to recover earlier today. All apologies for the outage.

This event will likely accelerate our plans to switch this blog (Camera Deals) to Wordpress, but we are planning to do it in a way that minimizes the impact on our readers. More on that later on.

Terms Of Use Of This Camera Deals Blog and its RSS feed

This only affects people who repost deals from here to other websites/blogs/forums/etc. This does not effect the vast majority of our blog readers! All apologies for going off-topic.

We spend a lot of time finding, filtering and babysitting camera deals here at the Camera Deals blog. Unfortunately a number of websites/blogs/forums/individuals think this is free labor for them and they can republish whatever interesting things they find here without providing the proper credit/reference. So it is time to "formalize" things a bit...

If you repost deals you find through this blog to other websites or blogs or forums or social media, you are required to provide proper credit/reference to this blog every time you do so. This applies to people working for a website/blog/forum and individuals posting in forums or blog comments or deal websites and such.

If you do not agree with this, please stop republishing deals from this blog without providing credit/reference. If you continue to take advantage of our hard work without providing proper credit, you agree to paying syndication fees that start at $1,000 per month for every month you take advantage of our work.

Please use the online contact form for questions or confessions.

Sidebar updates: Daily Deals and Deals & Specials sections

Last night we updated the "Daily Deals" and "Deals and Specials" sections in the right sidebar of this blog. We removed older links and re-prioritized existing ones based on the "heat" of the camera deals offered the last few weeks. They are the fourth and sixth item in the sidebar of the blog. You can use these to check the daily specials at any time of the day. We don't have 24x7 coverage on the blog, so we can easily miss some of the daily specials, so you have the opportunity to do DIY checks when we are dazed and confused.

Note to Webmasters/Bloggers (Not A Deal)

NOTE to Webmasters/Bloggers: If you use this Camera Deals blog or its full-text RSS feed to repeatedly repost specials on your websites/blogs, you must include a credit/reference to where you found it. Or pay a monthly subscription fee for all the free labor you are getting :) I don't want to start any rumors, but a number of blogs have been caught repeatedly abusing our work. You know who you are. Stop it or do it right :)

Housekeeping: Expired items marked in latest ten pages

We have a housekeeping update. We finished going through the latest ten pages of this blog post, testing/checking to see which specials expired and which remained. Most of them have expired. We may have a "best of what's left" round-up later this week. With so many specials and chaos and disorder, it is very possible+likely that we didn't find all the expired specials. If you notice any, especially if they drive you crazy, please leave a comment or let us know using the online contact form.

New updates on Wednesday (Tuesday = internet detox day)

New updates will resume on Wednesday. We vill take a sanity break on Tuesday (although it's already Tuesday!). There are too many individual posts to update here, I tried to update the ones on the first two pages, will get to the rest later in the week.

If you want to get a picture of what remains available/un-expired, as of Tue at 9:40am ET, we just finished updating the Black Friday and Cyber Monday Situation Room. As you can see, the list of expired items is almost as long as the active items and it doesn't even have headings.

Freebies section added to blog sidebar

We just added a "Freebies" section to the sidebar of this blog, right below the "Daily Deals" section. At the moment there is one entry, a link to the Amazon Android-ish App-Store that offers a premium app for free every day. In the past they have included a number of photography-related apps. We are only going to include true-free items there, so the list is likely to remain short for a long time.

Blog update: Menu updated with more options

The menu at the top of the page has been updated with new options, partially thanks to your feedback! If you have more suggestions, feedback, recommendations, etc, please leave a comment or use the online contact form.

Here is a quick recap of the options under the seven sub-menus:

+ HOME: return to the front page, see current month's posts, archives, jump directly to page #1 through #5 if you want to quickly catch up

+ MANUFACTURER: posts filtered by Manufacturer (eg Canon, Nikon, etc) - all items sold by manufacturer (cameras, lenses, printers, paper, bags, etc) [added Kodak and Ricoh]

+ DSLR/iLCs: Canon mount, Nikon mount, Pentax K-mount, Sony NEX, etc - for each mount, the main system components (cameras, lenses, flashes) are included regardless of who makes them (eg a Sigma lens in the Canon mount would go under "Canon mount")

+ CATEGORIES: all DSLR cameras, all mirrorless cameras, all lenses, all open-box items, all refurbished, in-stock alerts, coupons, etc

+ SPECIALS: on-going promotions that last for more than a few days such as the Nikon Instant Rebates, mail-in rebates, rewards promotions, etc. Space is very limited in the menu itself so we can't write a mini-essay to summarize it, however you can get a one-sentence summary of the Specials when you move your mouse over each sub-menu option

+ CONTACT/RSS: contact form, RSS feeds (everything and special-interest categories)

+ NOISY BLOGS: links to the other active noisy blogs (main blog, camera reviews, lens reviews, etc)

Blog Update: Drop-down menus replace giant link sprawl at top of page

We have added another "modernization" to this blog! The giant sprawl of links at the top of each page has finally been replaced by a drop down menu. Every single one of the previous links is included in the new menus. Each one of the menus has sub-menus. The menus and menu options will be optimized in the next few days, so if you have any feedback or preferences, please leave a comment or use the online contact form.

UPDATE: One of our readers pointed out that we missed two links from the previous link sprawl, the NoisyMall and the Main blog. They have now been added under the HOME menu. Thanks for catching it!

For the multi-taskers out there, all the sub-menu items can be opened in a new tab/window using the middle mouse button or right mouse click or other equivalent actions.

How to make the most of this blog

Time for a quick break from the deal stream with some tips on how to make the most of this blog:

+ you can quickly check the latest specials by manufacturer or camera mount or type (refurbished, open-box, lenses, mirrorless, coupons, etc) at the top of each page, by checking the gray area with the red links

+ on the front page of the blog, during each new calendar day, we move expired deals at the bottom of that particular day, that way the top of the page shows live deals, and the expired deals are clustered together below. It makes it easier to quickly scan the page for potential items of interest

+ links to the Daily Deals and Special Offers pages of various retailers can be found in the Sidebar of the blog, about one page-down from the top, right below the search box

+ prices and availability of cameras can change at any time. The text in the blog posts cannot be updated automatically when something changes. A good rule of thumb is that the further away in time you are from time/date of the blog-post, the higher the chances are that price/availability may have changed. That is one of the reasons we use a blog for this since every post has a time and date associated with it. We try to update as many as we can, but we can't get to them all all the time, especially if they are on-going specials that don't have a "built-in" expiration date.

+ there is a full-text full RSS feed and also special interest RSS feeds (eg Canon, Nikon, etc). The special interest RSS feeds are subsets of the full RSS feed, they do not have additional specials. If you subscribe to the full RSS feed you get all the specials posted.

Blog update: Quickly check specials by SLR mount

To make it easier to find specials by SLR mount, I added a new line at the top of every page. To locate it, look at the top of the page, at the gray area with the red links. The third line is the new addition - it has links to specials that are grouped by SLR mount.

This is different from the second line, which shows products by brand. For example, the Sigma 50mm f1.4 (Canon mount) is in the "Canon mount" category, but not in the "Canon" category since it is not a Canon-branded product.

You can use those links (from above or below) for bookmarking purposes if you like! Here is a quick recap...

+ DSLR/mirrorless: all interchangeable lens cameras (currently shows both DSLRs and mirrorless ILC but in the near future we will split them) - Examples: Canon 50D, Nikon D700, Panasonic GH1

+ CANON MOUNT - DSLRs and lenses for the Canon mount. Examples: Canon 60D, Canon 50mm f1.8, Sigma 18-200 (Canon mount)

+ NIKON MOUNT - DSLRs and lenses for the Nikon mount. Examples: Nikon D90, Nikon 70-300 VR, Tokina 11-16mm (Nikon)

+ ALPHA MOUNT - DSLRs and lenses for the Alpha mount. Examples: Sony A580, Minolta 7D, Tamron 70-300mm (Alpha)

+ PENTAX K-MOUNT - DSLRs and lenses for the Pentax/K-mount. Examples: Pentax K-5, Pentax 55mm f2.8, Sigma 50mm f1.4 (Pentax)

+ FOUR THIRDS - DSLRs and lenses for Four Thirds. Examples: Olympus E-5, Olympus 12-60mm, Sigma 50mm f1.4 (Four Thirds mount)

+ MICRO FOUR THIRDS - Cameras and lenses for Micro Four Thirds. Examples: Panasonic GH2, Olympus E-PL2, Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f0.95 (M43rds)

+ MIRRORLESS - mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Examples: Sony NEX-5, Samsung NX100, Olympus E-PL2
