If you want to jump into Android smartphones without breaking the bank on expensive two-year contracts and data plans, there is a brand new alternative to consider, the LG Optimus V Android smartphone, now in-stock and shipping at RadioShack.com (or your local Radio Shack) for $150. There is no contract. The lowest priced month-to-month no-contract plan for this phone at Virgin Mobile is a $25/mo plan with unlimited data and 300 anytime minutes.
The phone has already been available at other carriers as well with a different letter at the end, instead of the V for Virgin Mobile (eg S for Sprint, T for T-Mobile, U for US Cellular, One in Europe). Sprint now owns Virgin Mobile.
It has a 3.2" 480x320 screen, microSD slot, built-in camera, etc. It is obviously not state-of-the-art, but considering the price, it may be a bang-for-the-buck compromise as a first Android phone.
The phone is officially rolling out February 1st, but some places have already began selling it. As usual, be sure to read reviews and user opinions if you are not already familiar with this. One of the early bird buyers has a YouTube channel with hands-on videos with the phone.
