Question: in-stock/availability-alerts: Keep here or create separate blog?

We have an opinion-poll question for you! What would you prefer to do with the in-stock and availability alerts? Keep them on this blog as it is now, or create a separate blog dedicated to in-stock and availability alerts?

Please note this is an opinion poll, not a referendum, as there are other factors to consider from a publishing perspective (overhead, logistics, time, etc).

Request line: what do you want? (and a question on expired deals)

It is time again for another Request Line! Are there any particular cameras you are interested in and want us to keep an extra eye out for them? Let us know in the comments or via email or twitter.

And a question for the front pages of the blog. Do you prefer expired deals to disappear or remain with the (OVER) or (EXPIRED) or (SOLD OUT) indicators? There are pros and cons to each approach. If they disappear, it can drive people crazy who saw them before and are trying to find them again. But at the same time, it cleans up the page. So what do you think? Use the above (email, twitter) and/or vote in the poll below:

Godaddy specials: free private registration (with one or more domains) - also $7.49 .com domains

A number of our readers have an online presence, be it websites, blogs, galleries, personal and professional, so you may find these GoDaddy limited time offers of interest!

First up, you can get FREE Private Registration with your domain at GoDaddy.com. Usually with GoDaddy you have to buy five or more new domains to get free private registration, however, as part of this promotion, you can get private registration for FREE whether you get one, or two or more domains!

Next, if you are looking for a new .com domain, they are offering $7.49 .com domains at GoDaddy.com.

The discounts are automatically factored in to your shopping cart. There is no coupon code to enter! Most likely the two promotions cannot be combined, but obviously, the biggest savings are for the free private registration ($9 discount) versus the .com discount which is around $3.

For example if you have active Blogspot.com or TypePad.com blogs but you don't own the .com domains of your blog's name, it may be a good idea to get them, even if you don't plan on using them right away. Assuming of course that your blog name is unique enough that it is not already taken as a .com. The chances of ElephantPicturesInSpring.com being available are much higher than Photography.com :)

With Blogspot, you can easily redirect to a new domain, and Blogspot will automatically redirect all your existing visitors. We have done this with our blogs, such as RAWsumer and The Old Blog. Likewise, you can do this with TypePad as well, which we have also done for the new blogs, such as this very blog you are reading right now and the main blog.

Nailed them (sort of): FTC steps in to stop fake UK retailer

The FTC stepped in to stop a fake UK retailer from continuing to deceive customers in the European Union says Web Pro News. While the case is pending, the offenders, which are actually based in California agreed to "stop" this activity until the courts decide.

The offenders, based in California, created a .uk site selling to European customers leading them to think they were a UK site, and also lying about their participation in the "Safe Harbor" program. When the consumers received the products, they discovered their warranty was invalid and they had to pay import/duty fees as well. Outrageous!

I am sorry but what the FTC did is not good enough! A fraud like this needs a "shutdown zero", not a white-glove "stop until".

Re-arranging the chairs: Minor face-lift in the Blog's Sidebar

We forgot to mention it last night, but we re-arranged the items in the Sidebar, which may explain why this blog looks slightly different today than it did yesterday. If you have any feedback or suggestions for other features, please let us know!

Request line: What are you looking for?

"Request line" is back! If there any particular cameras and other related gear you are interested in, please let us know and we'll keep an extra-eye out for them! Obviously, we can't make the prices go down, but we can post them here when we spot them! You can use the comments section (now accepting Twitter and Facebook as a commenting-ID) or send an email if you prefer.

Update: Yikes, the front page of the blog is full of "dead deals". Is that a good sign for the economy or just randomness?

Price-check request line

The request line is back! If there are any particular cameras you are interested in, please let us know and we'll keep an eye out for them. If there is enough action for a particular camera, we'll also post a "price check" update.

You can mention them in the comments section, or send us a note using the web contact form.

Needless to say, we can't guarantee any good prices. If it was up to us, every camera would get discounted every day :)

Do you prefer expanded or compressed view on the front page?

We have a blog opinion poll for you! For the front page of the blog, do you prefer expanded blog posts or compressed blog posts? For the most part on this blog we have been using expanded blog posts. The downside of these is that you have to page-down more times to go through the different deals, plus we can put fewer per page so the page has a manageable size.

With the compressed view, you typically have the first paragraph or two of a blog post, and the rest has the traditional "continue reading". This has the benefit of making it easier to skim through things and also fit more stuff on the page. The downside is that if you want to read something in detail, you have to click one more time. An example of the compressed view is the 20% off Barnes and Noble post currently on the front page.

Now whichever way we go, it won't be an absolute. For example, if there is a super-good-deal, we will post it expanded on the front page since it will likely generate a lot of interest. On the other hand, if there is a very niche type of deal, we may post it compressed.

If you have any other suggestions, please vote for the "Something Else" option and send us an email or leave a comment with your thoughts.

Also related, we are now providing a headlines-view, sort of like a news-wire, where we have all the headlines for each month conveniently in one page. You can check the "Headlines" link at the top right corner of each blog page, or the "Archives" area in the right-sidebar. For example, here are all the deals posted in May 2009 in one page. Be sure to use your browser's search function (eg CTRL-D for Firefaux) if you want to look for a particular manufacturer or model name.
