Web Hosting: one year of Dreamhost for $19 for first year

This ends soon (I think): If you need an additional web hosting plan to experiment with different photo software and Wordpress plug-ins before you launch them on your "production" blogs, Stacksocial offers one year of Dreamhost web hosting service for $19 total. This is a shared web hosting plan. The $19 price is good for the first year only. After the first twelve months, your price will be whatever is the standard price at that time. You can get a feel for the price range by looking at the available plans at their website. We are using a Dreamhost shared web hosting plan for Wordpress experimentations.

TIP: this offer includes two free domains. However, for production domains, it is good practice to keep your domain registration with a web registrar that is different from your web hosting provider. This for various reasons (flexibility, technical or other issues with hosting, changing hosting providers, etc).

One year of Dreamhost Web Hosting for $19 total (price for first year only)

If you are looking to try your hand at self-hosted Wordpress photo-blogging or need an extra web hosting account for experiments and such, StackSocial is offering One year of Dreamhost Web Hosting for $19 total. This price is good for the first year only (12 months). You pay $19 total, not $19 per month for the first year.

After the first year, if you want to continue, you can renew at the then current prices. The renewal prices depend on whether you go month to month ($9 per month) or prepay for 2/3 years in advance and get a discount. You can see their available plans at their website. The $19 for first year offer is only available through Stacksocial.

We are using Dreamhost for test blogs and Wordpress experimentation. Keep in mind this is a shared hosting service, so you can't use it to host something like Engadget or anything that is too demanding on the web servers. This promotion expires at the end of September 2013. Be sure to check the terms/restrictions/deadlines before buying.

New .com domain names for 99c w/free private registration (first year only)

If you want to grab some more .com domain names, especially if you plan to use them as backups or forward them to your main websites/galleries/blogs/portfolios, there is a new promotion at 1&1 Internet that gets you the first year of a new domain registration for just 99c with free private registration. After the first year, it will automatically renew at the current price at the time of renewal. The current price right now for renewals is $10. Their domains include free private registration which protects your personal data from data harvesters, spammers and scammers.

If you haven't used 1&1 before, please note that they use an automated and unusual billing system. Domains auto-renew on their own every year. You can't manually renew them for multiple years. Because of this, this is perhaps best suited for backup domain names - since their price is typically lower than the other major registrars. On the plus side, you don't have to do anything, they renew automatically - just make sure your credit card information is current. I am using them for shortcut urls (eg noisymall.com is registered with 1&1) and backup domain names.

Webmasters: New .com domains w/free private registration for $5 (1st year)

If you are thinking of starting a new project or want to get some more "defensive" domain names, 1&1 is having a 50% discount on brand new .com registrations. The first year is $5 instead of the current price of $10. Renewals after the first year will be at the then-current price. 1&1 domains include free private registration by default, so your personal data is protected from data harvesters, spammers and scammers. If you haven't used 1&1 before, please note that they use an automated and awkward-ish billing system. If you are coming to this from other registrars like GoDaddy you may find it strange at first. This is best suited if you want to buy domains and let them auto-renew on their own every year. The renewal prices will not be a surprise since they are the current (as of the time of renewal) regular price shown on their website (currently $10 with free private registration).

$5 new .com domains for 1st year (with free private registration)

If you are looking to purchase some new .com domain names, 1&1 is offering $5 specials for new .com domains. The $5 price includes the domain name registration fee along with free privacy registration - for the first year. 1&1 will also pay the ICANN fees for the first year. The $5 price is only for the first year. This special is only good for new domains, not for renewals.

After the first year, renewals are at the regular prices as of the time of renewal, which are $9 per year now, and will increase to $10 per year on July 1st, 2011 (according to the renewal email I got in mid-May 2011). Free private registration is included for free with renewals as well.

A potentially good use of this promotion is to stock up on alternate and backup domain names for your website, blog, gallery, portfolio, and photography musings. Or if you came up with any good domain names for future use or development.

If you haven't used 1&1 before, please note they have a rather unusual and awkward billing system that some people may find irritating.

14-day free trial at Zenfolio

If you are the typical photographer, you probably have multiple galleries at multiple free and for-pay image-hosting services, and if you are the type who likes to try out new hosting services, and if you haven't used or tried Zenfolio yet, they do have a 14-day free trial so you can check out what they have to offer.

Please note that other than the free-trial, they don't have a free hosting option like flickr, so don't transfer your whole collection there unless you have decided to go with them.
