Ends August 15: 40% select Kindle e-Ink ereaders and accessories with Amazon Chase Visa

This coupon promotion applies only if you have an Amazon Chase VISA credit card, or if you are willing to apply for one and qualify before the end of this promotion which is August-15-2012 (barring any complications, they usually give you a decision within minutes and you can begin shopping right away).

This promotion gets you 40% off the current prices of the Kindle e-Ink models (4th generation) that have buttons-only. The models with keyboard or touch-screen or the Kindle DX or the Kindle Fire do not qualify. Only the two models shown above.

You must enter coupon code KINDLE40 in your Amazon shopping cart and pay for your purchase with an Amazon Chase Visa credit card (partial payments work as well if you have a gift card balance - or you can contact the Amazon Chat customer service and ask them to put a temporarily freeze on your gift card balance so you can pay with the credit card).

With the coupon code, the Kindle with Special Offers drops to under $50 with free shipping. This is brand new, not refurbished! The Kindle without Specials Offers drops to under $70. The coupon, as its name suggests, is 40% off the current prices.

The promotion is also good for select Kindle accessories. The accessories are not limited to the two eligible Kindle models. All the Kindle accessories linked through the promotional page are eligible. The biggest deal perhaps is the official Amazon Kindle DX leather cover which you can get for $18 after the coupon ($30 - 40% off).

If you are not sure whether an item is eligible, add to cart, make sure the Amazon Chase VISA card is your payment method, enter the promo code KINDLE40, and see whether the price drops at the top right corner of the Amazon Checkout page.

What is nice with this promotion is that you can use it multiple times for multiple eligible Kindles and eligible accessories. You have a limit of $100 in savings before you can no longer use it. The $100 limit, for example, is enough to buy three Kindle with Special Offers models at a discount (40% of $79 = around $32 discount for one Kindle. Three times $32~ of discounts is just under $100 of total discounts). Check the Terms and Conditions in fineprint at the bottom of the Amazon promotional page for the details.

This promotion ends August-15-2012.

Amazon Chase Visa users: Kindle w/Special Offers for $47 (without for $65)

If you have the Amazon Chase VISA credit card, you can get brand new Kindles for significantly lower prices when you enter coupon code kindle40 during the Amazon Checkout process. I have found two eligible models for this promotion:

+ 6-inch Kindle Wifi e-Ink with Special Offers for $47~ after coupon (pre-coupon price $79)
+ 6-inch Kindle Wifi e-Ink without Special Offers [corrected link] for $65~ after coupon (pre-coupon price $109)

The Special Offers are very subdued, so unless you hate any kind of advertising with a passion, you can put the $18~ difference into buying more ebooks to read or towards accessories! I should also point out that speculation is that Amazon will probably announce new Kindles in the summer/fall of 2012.

I must stress, this coupon will only work if you have an Amazon Chase Visa credit card, and if you pay for your order with the Chase Visa credit card. If you have a gift certificate balance in your account, the coupon will still work. I do not know what happens if your gift certificate balance is higher than the price of the Kindles.

The above are 2011 models. They only have buttons (no keyboard, no touch-screen). They are Wifi models (no 3G). You can do everything via Wifi - you don't have to connect them to a computer unless you want to.

Coupon-wise, I tested the Kindle Touch (2011 models), the Keyboard models, the Kindle DX, and the Kindle Fire, and the coupon did not work on those.

If you want to test blog subscriptions on those, there is a free 2-week trial on our main blog as a Kindle subscription. After the 2-week free trial, it automatically converts into a 99c per month subscription (you can cancel during the 2-week trial or any time after that).

Nook specials: $100 off any new Nook w/NYT sub (ended: refurb Touch $65)

If you love to read, especially while you are on the go or traveling while on assignment, there are a couple of new specials for the Barnes & Noble devices:

+ $100 off the current price of any new-in-box Nook at the Barnes & Noble website when purchased together with a 12-month New York Times (NYT) digital subscription ($20 per month). This promotion has now been expanded to include the latest Nook Tablet (8GB or 16GB). With the $100 off promotion, you can get the 6-inch Nook Touch e-ink for free or the 7-inch Nook Color (previous model) for $70, or the new 7-inch Nook Tablet (8GB) for $100 or the 16GB version of that for $150. This offer should be of interest only if you are/were considering to purchase a NYT digital subscription. Since all recent Nooks have a microSD slot, on-board storage is not as big of a deal as with an iPad/iPhone/Kindle. Best bang for the buck if considering NYT subscription imho: free 6-inch e-Ink Nook Touch or 7-inch 8GB Nook Tablet for $100
+ ended (via price increase) as of April-3-2012 check after nearly 1000 units sold... + refurbished Nook Touch 6-inch e-Ink e-reader offered for $65 with free shipping by Barnes & Noble on eBay

(ENDED) Nook Touch for $80, Nook Color for $150 with coupon and MC

This limited time promotion has expired... Barnes & Noble and Mastercard have a new combined promotion: buy a Nook Simple Touch (eInk) or Nook Color (previous model), use coupon code V3Y9N7T at checkout AND pay for it with a Mastercard card and save $20 off the current prices. The Nook Simple Touch (eInk, current model) is $100 - $20 = $80 and the Nook Color (previous color model) is $170 - $20 = $150. The promotion ends either on March 18, 2012 at 12am EST (aka 11:59pm EST on March 17) or on March 19 at 2:59am EST (conflicting information from B&N). The Nook Tablet is the latest color model and starts at $200 (8GB model), but it is not eligible for the coupon promotion.

Free Nook Touch w/purchase of 12-month $20/month NY Times digital subscription

If you are looking for an e-ink e-book-reader and also want a New York Times digital subscription, Barnes and Noble has a new promotion, you get a free Nook Touch eInk eReader with the purchase of a 12-month digital subscription to the New York Times for $20 per month. Your commitment is 12 months at $20/month, so this is a good deal only if you were already considering to sign up for a NY Times digital subscription. The digital subscription includes the Nook Edition and also gets you unlimited access to the New York Times website. You do not get a paper newspaper. If you cancel before the 12 months, you pay a $99 early termination fee, which is the current price of a brand new Nook Touch device. After the 12-months are over, you can cancel the NYT subscription without penalties.
