The 11.6" Samsung Chromebook (Wifi only) is back in-stock at Amazon by Amazon for its starting price of $250 with free shipping. This can be useful, among other things, as a digital assistant for lightweight tasks so you can spare the battery of your power-laptop/laptop-replacement computer for more heavy duty tasks... We started using one of these for blogging purposes, it's a lot faster to post quick blog updates/alerts with this rather than wait for Windows to start up or wake up unconfused :)
This 2-day special ended... Best Buy has launched a new 2-day online sale. The first row features MacBook Pro specials, while the fourth row has a $90 digital camera special, it is the Sony Cybershot W650 going for $90 with free shipping. These specials are good on their website until Saturday night (or earlier if sold out).
As of a 2/1/13 recheck, this is not in-stock and it is back in "temporarily out of stock". It has been going in and out of stock regularly, so stay tuned to Amazon by Amazon if interested...
The hard-to-found affordable digital-assistant/data-mule 11.6-inch Samsung Chromebook Wifi is back in-stock at Amazon by Amazon. Of interest especially if you live in the Google ecosystem (Gmail, G+, Drive, Picasa, Chrome, Docs, GReader, etc). It includes one USB 3.0 port and SD card reader. Note: no optical drive, no wired ethernet.
As of a Sun 1am ET recheck, this sold out... Amazon itself is offering the 11.6" Apple MacBook Air MD223LL/A (64GB SSD) for $900 with a January-30-2013 in-stock estimate.
As of a 1/27/13 recheck, it has sold out but if interested, keep checking at Amazon as it keeps going in and out of stock...
It is back in-stock! The 11.6-inch Samsung Chromebook (Wifi only) is back in-stock at Amazon by Amazon for its starting price of $250. This is of interest as a digital assistant, especially if you are part of the Google ecosystem (GMail, Google Plus, Google Docs, Google Reader, etc). Use Google for reviews or our previous post.
Speaking of Stock Status updates, some of the earlier pre-orders for the Panasonic GH3 have began shipping from various retailers and it was in-stock briefly yesterday at Adorama. For the latest situation, check the Stock Status page.
AS of a 1/27/13 recheck, it sold out but keep checking at Amazon as it keeps going in and out of stock...
This was one of the hardest to find in-stock gadgets of 2012, the 11.6-inch Samsung Chromebook (Wifi-only) is finally in-stock at Amazon by Amazon at its starting price of $250. This runs Google Chrome OS and has solid state memory only. No hard disks to deal with or worry about if you are out and about. Of photographer interest, this can be a digital assistant (emails, browsing, etc) and data mule and such. It has dual-band Wifi (b/g/n), one USB 3.0 port, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 16GB on-board storage, Bluetooth 3.0, SD card reader, HDMI, 6.5 hours of estimated battery life, 100GB of Google cloud storage for two years, etc. No optical media! No wired Ethernet! Obviously it does not have the firepower for image processing and such.
Of all the Chromebooks, this got the best reviews based on price and value. There is a $200 Acer model, but with a hard disk and too many corners cut. Google will find plenty of reviews, including Engadget and Ars Technica and Mobile Tech Review and Tech Time and ZD Net and The Verge et al. [I can't repost the whole Google search results here :)]
This has been consistently selling for $300+ by third-party sellers because it was hard to find. However, Amazon itself keeps its own price to $250.
