Do you prefer expanded or compressed view on the front page?
We have a blog opinion poll for you! For the front page of the blog, do you prefer expanded blog posts or compressed blog posts? For the most part on this blog we have been using expanded blog posts. The downside of these is that you have to page-down more times to go through the different deals, plus we can put fewer per page so the page has a manageable size.
With the compressed view, you typically have the first paragraph or two of a blog post, and the rest has the traditional "continue reading". This has the benefit of making it easier to skim through things and also fit more stuff on the page. The downside is that if you want to read something in detail, you have to click one more time. An example of the compressed view is the 20% off Barnes and Noble post currently on the front page.
Now whichever way we go, it won't be an absolute. For example, if there is a super-good-deal, we will post it expanded on the front page since it will likely generate a lot of interest. On the other hand, if there is a very niche type of deal, we may post it compressed.
If you have any other suggestions, please vote for the "Something Else" option and send us an email or leave a comment with your thoughts.
Also related, we are now providing a headlines-view, sort of like a news-wire, where we have all the headlines for each month conveniently in one page. You can check the "Headlines" link at the top right corner of each blog page, or the "Archives" area in the right-sidebar. For example, here are all the deals posted in May 2009 in one page. Be sure to use your browser's search function (eg CTRL-D for Firefaux) if you want to look for a particular manufacturer or model name.
