Panasonic FS4 ships for $100

While we can certainly complain about the prices of the advanced and high-end digital cameras and DSLRs, it's hard to complain about how things have developed at the entry-level. Perhaps the extra pressure from camera-phones and webcams combined with the intense competition and economies of scale (and other factors) contributed to the availability of feature-packed options at the $100 price-point.

When you compare to five years ago, you can get a lot more for a lot less at $100, inflation-adjusted.

Okay, enough blah-blah, the purpose of this post is a $100 camera deal with free shipping, which is the daily deal at J&R World: the Panasonic FS4. There is a limit of one camera per customer.

If you are a camera-addict, yet the name still sounds strange and unfamiliar, it is because Panasonic sneaked it in without telling many people about it. We accidentally run into it at the Panasonic website in late August.

It is intended to be an affordable but featured-packed LiIon-based P&S digicam. It has the evil battery-lock, but the evil gives around 400 shots per charge.

For just $99, with free shipping, you can have the Samsung SL202 delivered to your door. This is a basic P&S camera, with a 3X optical zoom lens, a LiIon battery, SD/SDHC, 2.7-inch LCD, and a ten-megapixel sensor.

This is turning into Panasonic day! For around $100, with free shipping, you can get the black Panasonic LS85. This is a basic AA-based point and shoot digital camera, and could make a good starter-camera gift, or perhaps the type of camera you leave in your car, office or bag, and won't shed (m)any tears if it gets lost, stolen or damaged.

It has a reasonable eight megapixels, with a 4X MegaOIS lens, 2.5" LCD, face detection, 33-132mm equivalent focal range, SD/SDHC, AA batteries, etc.

For around the same price, you can also get a bright bold-o-vision magenta-pink-purple body-color :)

Staying with the same price point, but a slightly older camera, the one that won the last budget-compact group-test at dpreview, you can get the Panasonic LZ8K by Beach Camera on Amazon.

PS: Interesting note, if you type "MegaOIS" with your right hand shifted one character to the right, you end up writing "MegaPOS" :-)

It may be hard to find a better camera going for $99 as new-in-box than the Panasonic LZ8K. This is the camera that beats the Canon A590is in the dpreview budget-compact group-test. Beat the Canon at dpreview? Oh my! :-)
